2008 NFL Superbowl: New York Giants vs. New England Patriots

New York Giants vs. New England Patriots

I don't like the Patriots seeing that their team is filled with an overwhelming amount of douchebags. I don't think NY is going to get blown away, although there are chances that it could happen. However, I don't see NE losing after getting this far with what they have done this season. They are an overall better team than NY. IMO, the only way NY can win is if they get turnovers which are not very common on NE's side this season. I think it will actually be a pretty good and close game but we will have to see.

One thing the Giants have is momentum and their fired the fuck up. Never underestimate a team that has those two things going.

Another thing is the New York has nothing to lose, and everything to gain. According to the masses, they aren't even supposed to be here. New England is the one with all of the pressure on them and if they lose, they will be known as the best "losers" of all time. If they win, its because they are supposed to win. This is where "Any Given Sunday" is put into play. That being said..... GO GIANTS!!!!

Despite how much I hate the patriots I really can't see them losing, Tom Brady manages to find a way to win in the super bowl every time we see him there. The giants will only have a chance if Eli can manage to keep up with his turn-over free play that he's maintained throughout the playoffs.

I would have to agree with everything you said here. I would also add that a key to success for NY would be to beat NE on Time of Possession. I learned that during the Eagles-Pats game where they went for the onside after the first drive; NE doesn't have many weak points, but it seems that their DEF would be easier to contend with than their offense.

Though I don't think that the Giants deserve their berth, I'm willing to ignore my inherent contempt for them and cheer for them on Sunday.

I know a lot of people are on the bandwagon of hating the Patriots because they are the best in team in football and maybe one of the best teams of all time. Every team in the NFL has people that talk trash and can be a little unsportsmanlike sometimes. However, on the Patriots, especially on their defense, there are just way too many douchebags. You have Vince Wilfork who has been fined several times this season for being a moron. Who the hell sticks their finger in another player's helmet, even if they weren't intentionally trying to poke their eye out? It's still really stupid. Richard Seymour on several occasions has intentionally pushed players back down to the ground after the play was over. Rodney Harrison is constantly being an ass on the field, up until the point where Belichik has had to temporarily bench him. There's a very fine line between "getting in to the game" and being downright unsportsmanlike, and the Patriots usually tend to cross that line. I respect the fact however, that almost all of the players on the Pats offense, barring randy moss, keep their mouths shut and play the game.

Ugh, I don't want to live in a world where Eli Manning has a Super Bowl ring.

Time to gear up for baseball season and hope the Eagles won't let me down next year.

Brilliant. Because the Patriots aren't on a bigger streak and aren't playing for one of the biggest titles in sports history (best team ever)

Re: 2008 NFL Superbowl: New York Giants vs. New England Patriots

I think this game is impossible to call. I live in the greater NY area and its the only thing thats been on TV, Radio, and newspapers for the last 2 weeks. Every aspect of the game has been overanalyzed and done to hell. Everything is different, one day the Giants have a shot, the next they're going to get blown away.

Both teams have been impossible to predict all season - the Pats haven't covered the spread since the Steeler game, and the Giants were picked against by every expert since the Tampa game, yet continually have found a way to win. It hasn't been pretty, but they've gotten the job done.

That being said, I firmly believe 2 things will effect the outcome of this game. The first is how well the offensive line of the pats hold up. Throughout the playoffs the Giants defensive line has been deadly, even moreso in the 4th quarter where they seem to actually get stronger instead of weaker. If the Giants - specifically Jason Tuck up the middle - can get to Brady, there could be an upset in the making.

On the other side, Eli has to have a good game and as close to perfect as possible. If he makes one bad mistake (fumble, bad pick, missed easy TD that ends up being just a FG) the Pats win this game.

I think the point he's making is that the Giants have been playing the best football of their lives, against the 2 best teams in the NFC. The Patriots haven't really won their games the way the Giants have.

you know your team is good when not covering the spread makes you "impossible to predict"

The only way, like everyones been sayin, that the giants will win is if they force Brady into making bad decisions. The pash rush of the Giants is real good (albeit bloated by that game against the Eagles), all that matters is whether the linebackers can take advantage of Brady trying to go to check downs who are covered.

I'd love to see Brady fall (mostly cause I'm a Dolphins fan, and we didn't get it done this season) but at the same time I'd not like the Giants to win because I'm also an Eagles fan. It should be an interesting game to say the least, and I think its a game that all of us will enjoy/remember.

Haha yeah, there's no doubt that the Pats are good, and they are hard to predict, its just in a good way. It's more how are they going to beat you - usually its Brady and Moss, against the Chargers it was defense - but still makes them hard to predict nonetheless.

And the Giants, while on paper are far inferior to the Pats, have made a habit this postseason for making experts and statistics look really bad.

Re: 2008 NFL Superbowl: New York Giants vs. New England Patriots

What have the Patriots done in the past month to make you think they're going to cover the spread? By not covering the spread is shows that the Pat's aren't playing as well as everyone has grown accustomed to.

Edit: Not to mention, the Giants are like 8-0 this season in games decided by less than 3 points. The Giants don't blow people out but they can certainly manage close games, and they have a defense that is built around stopping the pass when they know it's coming.

Look at how hard it was for Romo and Favre to move the ball in passing situations (Both of their final drives ended in Interceptions). Brady can't stand in the pocket like he does against other teams, and if the Giant CB's can throw off the timing of short passes, the D-line can easily take care of the rest of the job.

Theres going to be an asssssssload of pressure on our Linebackers, and ultimately they're ones that will decide the games if the CB's/D-line does what I expect them to do.

^ good point, Brady did have a shit game against them this season...
    76.2 completion %, 356 yards, 2 TD...117 rating.

Giants are 8-0 this season in close games? Wow that's crazy, the patriots are 18-0 this year in games. It's never been about blowing people out like the media wants you to think; it's about winning. Sometimes they won't do it amazingly well, but they will win.

I think once again you are all foolish for trying to make arguments for the giants. The only argument that needs to be said for the patriots is..
"It's the god damn patriots man"

I guess someone forgot to tell Demosthenes that football isn't played on paper?

And for being the best team of all time, your defense really isn't all that great. Giants average like 20 a game and dropped 35 when they had absolutely nothing to play for. The chargers had a peg leg Phillip Rivers, no LT, and still only lost by 1 possession.

No one is arguing about them being great this season, they're saying what the Giants need to do to get it done. Those close games that everyone's quoting are showing the same weaknesses that the pats have shown in their close games, Brady under pressure and unable to utilize his passing attack.

Not to mention, their rush def isn't too shabby either. And damn dude, get off it, we all know the pats are good, just relax and let people enjoy the upcoming game and their predictions.
