you have to remember where this shit comes from. they discovered HPV (the virus that we're refering to) from doing research on nuns... why nuns? people realized that nuns never got cervical cancer. they realized that almost every sexually active person has HPV, it's just extremely rare to ever see any symptoms. the really bad forms of HPV give cancer. the less bad ones give genital warts. so far there isnt a form of HPV that does both. you can get any form of hpv via skin to skin contact, and chances are if you've been laid, you've been infected.
FUCK.
So has the vaccine really been "withheld" from anyone? I thought it was just a matter of awareness and stigmas and misinformation (thanks fundamentalists).
the only one that's available is the one that's for women that can give them cervical cancer/warts. this type of HPV isnt dangerous for guys (from what i can tell). however, the kind that is dangerous to guys does not have a vaccine.
Well, Wikipedia has almost no information on who it's "available" for, but they did say
Almost all my information about it comes from listening to Loveline, which might be a bit disconnected from reality.Gardasil also targets HPV types 6 and 11, which together currently cause about 90 percent of all cases of genital warts.
It's only available for women, since that's who the clinical trials were for. Some strains of HPV (there are over 100 total, 30ish of which are genital) cause genital warts in both men and women. It obviously causes cervical cancer in women, but it also causes penile cancer in men. Penile cancer is just very rare, but HPV is a necessary precursor for it.
Gardasil is a vaccine against 4 of 30ish genital HPV strains - the 2 that cause approx. 70% of cervical cancer in women (I don't know if there is enough info to know if those also are penile-cancer-causing strains), and the 2 strains that cause 90% of genital warts in men and women.
It's short-sighted and ridiculous that it isn't available to men also. I'd get it in a second.
Don't worry, you're cirumcised so you can't get penile cancer. Clearly.Originally Posted by archibaldcrane
