Nothing else better to do.
First off, great question. There's many good MMOs out there that are worth trying, and all of them offer the same kind of personal interaction with others. So why not try something else?
I just like how this one works, ya know? I like how even after four years or so, the game still isn't old even in the old areas. And if it starts to feel that way, you can always grab another job and start levelling and get that experience back again. Hell I even started levelling on one of my mules, just so I could get the experience of starting from the beginning again. What a pain in the ass having to walk everywhere and die a lot and struggle with no money, but it's fun!
Something else I recently kinda figured out - when you get serious into endgame, the fights are so much better. I got really into doing the missions and the quests, and I never wanted to even bother with the big HNM scene because of the major stigma that surrounded it on this particular server. Now I've started to run out of missions and quests to, the interest in fighting the more challenging monsters in the game got to me. I'm not exactly doing it out of personal gain or for gear, though that's still a nice deal since it improves your productivity. Even if something goes wrong and your team loses.. it's still fun (and usually a good laugh).
1) Friends.
2) The graphics are nice to look at/I really like how my character looks.
3) FFXI is great for killing time.
4) I've put so much time into my character, how could I stop?
I think that last point is usually the biggest one. :/
Rapido is pretty badass. FFXI needs moar mobs that kick up dust clouds at super flee speed.Cactrot Rapido
1) Friends (Ventrillo makes the game 10x more fun)
2) Still new things to do (I haven't even done a campaign battle yet, only attempted einherjar a couple times, need to kill AV when the GMs let the secret out)
3) When comparing it to other sources of entertainment, it is quite cheap. (One day of going out to a movie, and restaurant will be more then a month of X hours of gaming.)
4) TV usually sucks.
5) It's cold outside (Canadian)
edit
Still beats every other MMO out there in my opinion. (tried WoW, D&D, Lineage 2, Guild Wars, Knight Online)
Yea, because camping 4 year old content day in and day out makes me cream my pants everyday, let me tell ya.Originally Posted by Saithorx

UO (and it's predecessors), EQ, FFXI, WoW, whatever they are- all of them have the endgame trap. The only way is not to sit there doing so- or be driven into it. Whenever I look at something to do in an MMORPG, I ask myself:
"Is pursuing this going to kill my fun playing the game?"
If the answer is "Yes", I don't do it. Cause the purpose of games is to have fun, not stare at darters, not cockblock guilds on the way to Plane of Time, not do the same instance 100 times for a rare drop.
Sometimes, it's something I think is fun that gets burned by other people- but that's different. Doing stuff that takes some effort is OK too, long as there's not a chance of 0-reward at the end. I'm still having fun doing it when I succeed, I can go in knowing there's a reasonable chance to win.
Challenge is fun. Getting a Ridill is not fun. Ritualized hate machines like Kings are Not Fun. Even Dynamis I'll usually come out of with a few bits and pieces towards that Mandau someday.
Figuring out I had a nice, stable money supply a zone away from my homepoint was fun. Taking on 8 Campaign monsters at once and winning with no deaths and 3100 limit points is fun. Beating Divine Might was fun. Getting my Evisceration WS was fun. Taking on Maat as RDM 70 was fun.
Things that keep me thinking, planning, doing are what keep me playing FFXI. I've always stopped MMORPG's when I hit a point that I couldn't.
Bull, you and I know it's Prishe that keeps you playing!Originally Posted by Jkun

- too hard to quit after all the time put in to my character and the cummulation of rare items it has now

- leveling new jobs is kind of fun.. and so it getting to try them out in events
Mostly just the people I know in-game these days, and an unhealthy inability to quit anything I'm still attached to. The reason I came back from yet another break was the expansion, namely the new jobs and missions. Disappointed with Scholar, disappointed with missions (or lack thereof), disappointed from complete lack of word from SE about updates over 2 months after release. Pretty much just back to people being the only reason I'm still around. In WoW I don't know many people so, from an e-social aspect, FFXI wins for me. That's pretty much its only saving grace right now.
Oh and I want my damn Perdu Hanger and self-signed Demon (Devil?) Killer![]()
Fish Ranking!
not really.
Most likely...
1. Friends
2. Vent
3. Salvage/dynamis, I actually like non-city dynamis and cop dynamis.
4. Storyline, I cant wait to see what happens in WoTG.
Friends
Salvage
Doing random stuff
Pretty much the reason I've stayed this long is friends, but, out of my 6 oldest friends on FFXI, 4 sold their accts, 1 got banned, sooooooooooooooooooooo...
That plus the fact that my ls primarily does HNMs, which is, of course, the 2005 way of thinking, which ive done SINCE 2005, so I'm pretty much orz about that.
Believe me, it's a great game, I'm still on the fence if i'm gonna keep playing or not. Too much of what I've yet to do in this game are the events that require statics/large number of people, like Salvage, Einherjar, Assaults outside of nyzul, etc. Until I get a better job, my playtimes don't really allow me to play the usual times with my ls, or anyone for that matter, so D:
1. Friends
2. The fact I've been here for 4 years and know everything about this game relating to me
Come on, new and better content!!!1111
Friends. FFXI has shown me more than anything that people can turn into gigantic assholes over stupid things, and that has also led to me finding some of the best friends I've ever had.
Plus, I enjoy playing the game for the gameplay itself. I like tanking of any kind, nothing makes me happier than when something scary is slapping me around. Plus, there are still a lot of things I haven't done. I'm not one of those people who's done everything under the sun, with a gazillion 75s and the gear to match the jobs - I still have a lot of goals left.![]()
