    Help save my internet!

    This is what we're on.

2PCs 1PS2(rarely online) connected directly to router, 2PCs connected wireless to the same router. My dad has been bitching lately because his internet randomly goes down on his computer and he blames it because we're all on at the same time. (Have not been on ps2 since before the issue occured) he's using a crappy wireless card for his computer so im 100% sure that's why his internet keeps failing. The router and the modem we currently have are about 6 years old. Totally outdated im sure. Would getting a new router/modem help the internet randomly shutting off on our wireless pcs? Or what would be needed to help this?

    Re: Help save my internet!

I always had issues like that when I ran a router and a modem. It helped for me when I got a 2 in 1.

Also i had some bad experience when I went wireless. Even when my router was in the other room I would watch my connection fail a bunch of times. So I just went out to Radio Shack and bought an ethernet cable. Then I did a wall fish and connected my pc directly to my router/modem combo and I have 110% better speeds.

I say go get a 2 in 1 combo along with an ethernet cord. Hook the modem/router directly to your dads pc as the main line. An then you take the ethernet cable and wall fish it to the modem and then connect it to line 1.

If your downloading or uploading anything that will drastically lower your dads speed. But if yoru just playing FFXI or Wow. Then you shouldn't be taking up that much bandwidth.

When you go wireless you often leave yourself open to other people getting onto your bandwidth. So if your living in an apartment or a condo. Your neighbors might be jacking your signal.

Honestly, routers and adapters are so cheap now-a-days that dealing with shitty signals is just downright torture. You can get the tried/tested/true WRT54G for like $50 or less, and a nice PCI adapter for ~$40 (screw USB adapters). How many feet away (through walls, in a direct line) is your dad's computer from the router? Stuff like microwaves, portable phones, and steel trusses can all contribute to a lossy signal, so keep that in mind.

if this is a recent issue just try reseting the router to default settings and make sure you set a password for the wireless so noone can jack your signal. Also try updating the router firmware. If his PC is the only one losing connection randomly then tell him to get a new wireless adapter.
