I love it when people talk like this. It's like "oh no the drinks suck because I'm not getting good stuff." Of course it's going to suck. Good drinks can and probably will cost more, because whoa, they are using much better quality ingredients that won't make you say 'omg it burns' going down. 5$ for a mojito really isn't bad considering it's one of the drinks that actually requires a little more time to prep. Most bars that serve only premium drinks and make them well charge 7-8$ min, so your 5$ mojito is a really good deal.Originally Posted by Tyche
A $5 mojito, unless it's in Cuba, won't be made "properly." By that I mean properly muddling the sugar and mint leaves, by hand; not just slinging an ounce of mojito mix in with bar rum and soda water then throwing a few mint leaves in before the ice.Originally Posted by Daydreamer
Fun fact: The Mint Julep is basically just a mojito but with bourbon instead of rum.

Oh gosh, you really picked the wrong person to get into a drink subject with. Seriosuly I know how the hell to make a good mojito. I can make one just as good as in cuba (I have cuban rum, and actual cubans have told me it tastes the same). So, of course I Know what to look for in a good bartender and in a good drink.Originally Posted by Elesirdur
And what do you know, the bar right down the road from my work, the only one I will go to in this town, charges 5$ for a mojito, and oh em geez they muddle the mint with the sugar, then add lime wedges and muddle those for juice (muddling the lime isn't actually that common in this drink, usually it's muddled mint and then added fresh lime juice is added, however this bar does not have fresh squeezed juice so they muddle the lime instead, after they muddle the mint, to make sure the flavors are extracted from both).
Hell they might even charge less than 5$ there. The bartenders there know their stuff, but they aren't known for the drinks, so if you go in asking for a classic like a Manhattan, Old Fashioned, or a Mojito they get all giddy and will make you one to perfection, for a damn good price usually. My Woodford Reserve Old Fashioneds there cost me about 4.50.
Edit:
Fun Fact: Saying a Mint Julep is like a mojito with bourbon instead of rum probably means you add soda water to your julep, which means you're retarded.
ITT: Girly drinks, lolz.
As far as "hard A" goes at the bar the most I'll get is a few shots of Jameson. Everything else is just beer beer beer.
And remember noobles, beer doesn't make the beer belly, the body-type does. :<
Okay, that's cool you've found a local place that serves it right. I was making the (now I know, incorrect) assumption that this was at a a bar bar or a club, not a local place. When mojitos got popular last summer where I live just about every pub, lounge, bar, and club in town served them. Only a few good places actually made them properly, and those were the places that had good bartenders in the first place; and commanded a higher price. Everywhere else they were overly sweet and used a mix base, usually on special and marketed at young women as a sweet drink.
And every recipe I've ever seen for a mint julep contains muddled mint and sugar, bourbon, and seltzer or soda water - which 9/10 times you'll get a club soda. A good one, to me, only adds a squirt of soda water, not a large(r) volume like in a mojito. I really fail to see the difference between a mojito and a mint julep other than lime, being served in a highball glass instead of a collins glass, and the mojito being mostly soda water where the julep has just a splash.

what the fuck are you talking about? I never said the drink sucked because I wasn't getting the good stuff, or however you wanted to interpret what I said. I said $5 for a drink sucks when I usually get $2.50 drafts. I could drink 4 or 5 of those mojitos during a dinner sitting. Oh so fucking good, but I can't bring myself to spend $20 on drinks, I don't care if I'm drinking 300 year old wine. I'm not a drink aficionado. I don't go out to bars, ever, especially high end bars just to sample their high end drinks. If you couldn't tell, I'm pretty casual in my drinking. I couldn't care less if they grew the mint leaves using american bald-eagle feces as fertilizer and mixing the soda with newborn cuban piss, as long as it tastes good. How the hell would I know if I had a bad mojito anyway, I drank 2 mojito's from one place. Hardly a large sample size to pass a judgment on their ingredients.Originally Posted by Daydreamer

Ok I see your point about the mojitos, however a julep should not have club soda. The only time it should ever be added is a the very beginning (and only like a tsp full) to help dissolve the sugar, and should never be used to top a drink. A lot of places use sugar syrup now to replace the soda entirely. source: Kentucky Derby, and Dale DeGroff, considered at one time america's best bartender.Originally Posted by Elesirdur
Sorry, but it's a personal thing of mine when people compare drinks. Mojitos are like mint juleps with an added lime, rum instead of bourbon, topped with soda water, and traditionally served in a tall glass instead of a short glass. That's already 4 differences. Seems pretty different to me.
We should really rerail this thread though. If you want to continue drink discussions either PM me or seach for one of the countless drink threads I've stared in years past (or make a new one).
Well, if it was intended at someone else, then disregard my statement. I thought you you were talking about me, I thought the quoted statement was you saying I had a bad mojito cuz it was $5. Maybe I did, but oh me geez it was good.
I wish I lived in an area where drafts were $2.50 and mixed drinks were only five dollars. Only way I see that is happy hour or big beers(massive styrofoam cup of bud? for 2.50 at one bar near me)
Na it's cool. I got mixed up in the names. Seriosuly I love mees some good beer. Especially when it's only like 3$ish a pint. They have this new pecan ale seasonal at a local bar here that is amazing.Originally Posted by Tyche
And about the mojito, if you read another post of mine you'll see that it is totally possible to get a great mojito for 5$, just depends on where you go. I bartended a few parties before and wanted to see profit margins for premium drinks, mojitos ended up being the biggest grossing thing, costing only 1.12$ to make, which was unreal compared to the other things.
