Maybe we can derail this slightly to create a more productive thread. I've been fascinated (and horrified) by all of the recent account insecurities. However, reports of what can be done during those first few moments have been a little vague. I've heard people saying that they have been able to successfully freeze their account relatively quickly after said account has been compromised. How exactly is this done? It seems like this has been the most effective countermeasure so far when dealing with these problems.

Much like all things SE/FFXI it comes down to Luck. If you get lucky, as in not getting hacked on a weekend/holiday/offpeak hours you can possibly get your account locked within the day or two if your representative on SEs side takes you seriously and files things in rapid sucession.

Now if you get unlucky, your looking at a week or more, the possibility the 'form' that you filled out over the phone gets lost and that you end up going days thinking your account was locked when it wasnt. Simply, since it takes little less than 30mins to clean out the average account - your screwed once the persons inside the account: how screwed is a matter of who the person is doing the hacking.

WHY IS THIS CONCEPT SO HARD TO GRASP?

Have you EVER met these people irl? No? The only interaction you've had with them is in-game? Yes? Then don't fucking give them your account information! "But they're my friends!" ... that you met on a GAME, a virtual world. YOU DON'T KNOW THESE PEOPLE!

You would think people would learn after all the latest mass hackings and RMT stealing accounts, not to give out sensitive POL information.

But on a more serious note, if I shared my place with anyone (even family) my whole machine would be password protected. Failing that, I wouldn't have my password saved in POL or anywhere important.

Could be an inside job based on what you say, but it also could be an RMT job based on the fact it mirrors many of the aspects of of the Blitzkrieg strategy that some RMT use in getting money, sellables without changing over your info.
