Most Overrated/Underrated Actors

Was reading the Star Wars thread, Septimus made a special post that prompted me to wonder what everyone else's thoughts are. He claims:

Today on Septimus Says Controversial Things.

Samuel L Jackson is the fourth most overrated actor alive today. Jack Nicholson, Al Pachino, and Robert DiNiro are the top three.

That was today's episode of Septimus Says Controversial Things.

I have agreed with the above almost entirely for a long time and have been told I am fool. I love Nicholson in The Shining and Pacino in GlenGary Glenross, De Niro to me has pretty much one role down extremely well, the gangster role, though he was good in Hells Peak I thought.

As far as other overrated, the fact Ben Affleck is even considered an actor bewilders me. He is so god damn god awful, I cant watch him in anything outside of his small role in Mall Rats. He was mediocre in boiler room at best, and Alec Baldwin's speech in Glengarry Glen ross (his best acting performance ever and one of my favs in a movie of all time, link provided: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TROhlThs9qY) shits on Ben's mock performance of it.

Underrated, Christian Bale, Edward Norton, and Joaquin Pheonix dont get the props they deserve, though they are close, and eventually will I think.

What do you guys/gals think?

Edit: And Daniel Day Louis is highly underrated. One of the best out there too.

How I left him on my list bewidlers me. He gets like 20mil a movie, and yes, he sucks.

I didn't mind Afflect in movie like Smokin Aces or Dogma, or every other short cameo/small role he had. Never watched most of his movie tho.


On topic, I dont think there is any actor I like/hate enough to add to this topic.

Uma Thurman

She performed greatly in both halves of Kill Bill, the drama and the action, was very convincing in her role. I'm surprised she wasn't offered more roles after it. Big shame considering she's a great actress. I'll put her up as underrated.

I don't like this thread , I don't have any issues with Nicholas Cage, he usually plays the right role with the kind of personality he has. I think alot of the popular actors/actresses we as a generation don't necessarily like is due to a generational gap. The baby boomers probably love them, hence their success, them being such a large part of our society and all.

Lol, just reading this made me remember the movie and how much of a prick he was in it, yeah he was pretty good. But still a relatively minor role, I cant think of movie role he was cast in that was major that I was remotely blown away or left thinking he was particularly gifted. I absolutely fucking hate Nicholas Cage. Me and my brothers have a running gag about how we mix up all of his movies, (regardless of how different they are) based on the fact that HE PLAYS THE SAME CHARACTER IN EVERY MOVIE HE'S EVER PLAYED, EVER.

I'd say Brad Pitt is somewhat underrated in the movies he has done well in, also would say Jennifer Connelly, despite getting an oscar, I believe is pretty under-rated by the general populace. She has these little nuances that she does when she acts, that you can tell are scripted,but come off as so natural, it's almost creepy sometimes. I could think of some other ones, but I agree with a lot of the above, especially Jack Nicholson.

For underrated, Paul Giamatti. Ed Norton is great and I went to see the Illusionist for him, but Giamatti really stole the show, and is consistently good in even the bad movies I've seen him in.

I'll agree on Cage. If I wasn't so lazy, I'd lazy, I'd shop him into that "This is a sandwich" template. This is a Nicholas Cage, it is made of Twitchy and Monotone.

What is sad about the three that I pointed out was that they were good actors way back in the day, but they all stopped acting in the late-70's/early-80's.

Even if the Screen Actor's Guild and Motion Picture Academy used a laser to carve the phrase "Daniel Day Louis is a fucking amazing actor" into the face of the moon, I would still consider him underrated in the eyes of the public. He needs to do more movies so he can maybe shame some other actors into trying harder.

Brad Pitt is anything but underrated. He's a great fucking actor but he's rated as a great fucking actor.

Ben Affleck is either intolerable or great.

Nicholson has done great stuff (one flew over the cuckoo's nest) but he's so typecast it's retarded.

Not sure how underrated these guys are but I normally at least dl any movie with them in it. Christian Bale, Edward Norton, Brad Pitt, Kevin Spacey, Russell Crowe, Matt Damon, kinda Leonardo Dicaprio. I think I'm missing 1 or 2 people. There are very few, if any, female actors that I feel the same way about their movies.

Eh, I don't care for Connelly, but it could just be that I still just see her in Labyrinth and Rocketeer, and she was sooo green... I dunno, I don't dislike her but I kinda don't care to see things she's in.

Overrated... you know, he has done some really amazing work (and some other not so much), but the hype Tom Cruise seems to expect just from being IN a movie makes me cringe, and he's not worth quite THAT much hype. ._. Mel Gibson, too, hit that mark a while ago for me.

Underrated.... hm. Well, I suppose I am biased because I adore this man, but speaking of Labyrinth, David Bowie really should act/have acted more. He had some really great performances onstage and in some films... not all.

Piper Perabo is another chick I'd consider underrated. Her performance in "Lost and Delirious" was amazing. It's a lesbian schoolgirl coming out story, in the last half of the movie after the sex-scene the acting gets extremely intense, especially due to her performance.

I can't imagine Piper Perabo being bad as a lesbian schoolgirl even if she tried.

And as far as Brad Pitt, I always thought people didn't think much of his acting, guess I got the wrong impression.
