Apparently SE launched http://www.finalfantasyxi.com/ about a week ago, just a basic promotional site for people who haven't bought the game, but it looks decent enough browsing through it. Didn't see a link on the POL site, just got it through a random SE e-mail.

That's... actually a nice site with just the right info for anyone stumbling upon it. Marketing gets a cookie. Actually, it's kind of nice to see the game presented in a way that doesn't make it obvious it's nearing 6 years old and that's just NOT the pol site. Trap: Clicking the 'join now' button with 360 box shots does actually drag you to POL.

Splash needs to be a disclaimer though--"99.9% of all players will never actually get to fight Odin because we made it stupidly hard. Sorry."



...Anyone think this was a direct response to the WoW ad campaign of goofy celebrities? SE might actually get some players in if they made some kind of demo in a downloadable format. I'm sure it'd be easy if, say, they limited it to the original areas (or even just the noob/nation regions)... but it's including the billion .dats of graphics and gear from 5 years of additions that make it about impossible. Actually, anyone remember what the PC version original install was in size vs what we have today?

Wait. Actually. Wtf. If the WotG disk was all of 350MB of data that was a lot of old zone copying +some other details, it must be possible to cram the original world into a package that size. Let the updater do the other stuff. Just don't include all the mission/quest/musics that take up space. Then again, making a zone with most of the npc chat lines cut out of the .dat would actually require effort.
