Because there are a lot of Cuban refugees in Florida who fucking hate Castro and everything he stands for and have since earned the power of the vote.Originally Posted by guartz

I dunno, that really only explains why Floridians and Presidential candidates go along with it. I think if it wasn't for the Cold War and the rest of the history with Cuba, most of the country would be ignoring it as much as we are Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Guam, and the other nearby islands that 90% of Americans couldn't find on a map.
Tack on "and Florida is a perennial swing state" "at one time during the cold war this policy did in fact make sense" and "Cuba doesn't have anything that we'd want to import besides cigars" and that's about the long and short of it.Originally Posted by Correction

I fail to see the point. If it wasn't for world war ii and the slaughtering of millions of jews we might have ignored Germany too, what's the dealio?I think if it wasn't for the Cold War and the rest of the history with Cuba, most of the country would be ignoring it
I mean that therefore, the cold war and the motivations for it can be considered a cause of our collective attitude towards Cuba. Nazi Germany's actions can likewise be considered a cause of our involvement in the European Theater, so it's a useful analogy. The important part is, it's not just a matter of keeping expatriates happy, the rest of us are still a little pissed off at them too.
I'd like to see how you define Guam as 'nearby'Originally Posted by Charla

lol,
I love these responses. Of course, they are wildly inaccurate. For example, the cuban missile crisis happened in October 1962, while the full embargo was actually in February of 1962. The bay of pigs was a CIA sponsored invasion of Cuba, not exactly a Cuban act of aggression. And you can't really blame Cuba for turning to Soviets, I mean, when one Super Power is trying to annex you, what do you do? Why, go to the other world super power.
So, why did this all come about? ... could it be that *gasp* a American fruit company was kicked out of Cuba and couldn't make millions of dollars anymore on cheap labor?
Typical guartz response.
Nobody said Cuba's history with the U.S. was one where they were the aggressor.
But ultimately that doesn't matter. The countries aren't friends and *zomg* that's worked in the favor of the communist dictatorship in place there. The powers in Cuba don't want peace with the U.S. because then they'd have to answer for the shitty treatment of their population, which still floats over on rafts every day because they can't stand life there anymore.
Blame the U.S. all you want it's definitely us to blame for stuff like embargoes and the Bay of Pigs, but what the fuck nobody said it wasn't. We only 'treat' Cuba this way because there's no benefit to making nice with them.
One word.
Bad Boys II.
I know that isn't one word.
That and there is still lingering communist hate from the red scare.Originally Posted by Correction

Thanks for the typical guartz response comment, I think it's a compliment.

When I mean 'typical guartz response' I mean you take a defensive position against something nobody said. Nobody said the bay of pigs was a cuban act of aggression. The answer given to 'why is cuba treated this way' was 'because we aren't friends with Cuba, because Fidel Castro gains power by not being friends with the U.S.A., and because Florida politics revolve around placating the anti-Castro exiles.'
To which you immediately respond with 'lol innacurate responses USA is the aggressor blah blah soviets blah blah annexation.'
I should learn my lessons about arguing with you but for god's sake don't fucking take pride in your obliviousness.
