Had it not been for people pushing the limits of graphics on hyper realistic games, we wouldn't have the capability to render games with cool, innovative, visual styles. You're not going to be able to push something like Odin Sphere on an NES without horrible pixellation and removing all the fancy lighting effects, all of which are there thanks to our new "superficial, Madden 2025" graphics engines.
Think of all the new visuals you could create if you had control of an engine that could render anything as realistically as you want. What's stopping anyone from taking that graphical power and applying it to their style of visuals? How about a game with manga-style art with characters that don't look like they're made out of plastic? Or a western comic-book art style that can actually afford to be as detailed as a high-quality version of what we have out today, instead of an extremely watered down version that loses all the detail? And it goes on from there, you imagine the rest. Few games can honestly hold claim they wouldn't get any better if they could have done whatever they wanted with their graphics.
You can get your knickers in a twist all you want about how shallow some games are, which is all fine and dandy but has nothing to do with how well good games could use those kinds of graphics.
