my pld is 70, close to 71
macuha+1/iron ram shield (sold my generals)/bibiki
aegishlkajfhakjdfad/shield torque/insomnia/buckler
gallant/gallant/jelly/herc
knightly/swift/gallant/gallant

i have koenig helm, dusk gloves, dusk boots, warwolf belt, and other things that could be situationally good.

just wondering what kind of set ups i should use for basic xp tanking? i heard koenig helm -> aegishajkf for flash voke, and dusk hands -> gallant for voke. just getting confused about what to macro. also, is trance belt worth the price over warwolf? and im sitting on gil from a sold hagun, thought about cerb mantle or gigant (but i know that was discussed in another thread). i dont have sea access (got gf to start playing, had to get her caught up (lvl and mission wise) and now everyone doenst wanna do it) so homam and boxers mantle arent available yet. is dusk only for flash? or would it be better to keep enm+? again, sorry if its been asked already

Full DD setup to 75, then campaign in whatever the fuck you want to campaign in.

Joyeuse/IR Shield/whatever
Ohat and Turban/PCC. ChivChain/Brutal, Suppa, Ethereal, etc
Haub/Dusk/Woodsman, Sniper, Toreador, Ulth, Rajah
Amemet, Forager's/Swift, Life, Warwolf/Dusk/Dusk

Trance Belt is a waste of gil unless you can get it really, really cheap (like 50k, I had paid 400k for mine) or you can kill the NMs for it.

Dont even bother with shield in xp post 70.

Weapons/armor from 70-75 for meripo:

Company Sword / Joytoy.
Optical Hat (until turban).
Chiv chain/PCC, and soil gorget for vorpal.
Suppa/Ethereal *(brutal at 75)
Hauby
Dusk gloves/feet.
Galliard pants or valor, not many good options here till 75.
Acc rings.
Attack back.


That will do enough DD to keep you from being a leech and get you to 75 in a hurry.

When at 75:
My setup:

Justice/Joytoy (excal main hand is better but im not finished yet).
Askar head. Ares for macro.
Ares body (use hauby main if I dont have madrigal, depending on what im fighting)
Homam Hands. Heca for WS.
Homam Legs. Ares for WS.
Homam Feet. Heca for WS.
Haste belt (swift is easy, V is better obviously). Warewolf/Potent for WS.
Cerb mantle.
Suppa/Brutal.
Acc rings.
Fort torque or PCC, Soil for Vorpal.

Even with the best gear you wont be breaking any records or wooping a good DD, but you will beat the pants off any AH NQ DD and have some fun keeping your buffer up. I mostly merit on mnk or nin, but still pull pld out when my buffer gets low.

Have fun. And get sword merits and crit hit merits fast if you plan on meriting like this for a long time.

Another option is to grab a Great Sword and go with that. It's especially viable idea imo if PLD is your first job and you don't yet have Joyeuse/Justice sword or the means to get one asap. Great sword with a reasonable accuracy setup (basically go with the DD setups the guys listed above already but replace Suppanomimi with Assault Earring or even just Coral/Spike/Merman's Earrings) and sushi will do better than a sword if you don't have Justice or Joy. Perdu Sword is an excellent weapon and free with Imperial Standing, Subduer is free from KS30s or you can get a decent enough Gsword from AH. I did nearly all of 70-75PLD with a Gsword "leeching" in LS meritpos (this was in the two-three weeks after the 2hander patch last summer) and making walmart ninjas cry. Ossom fun. Whatever you go with though, remember that nobody wants a blueberry-coloured brick wall in a meritpo, you need to do your share of the damage to keep chains going. Stop thinking like a meat shield and think like a DD and you'll be fine.

why use great sword as a pld DD when your skill cap at 75 is 26 levels below sword? main handing company sword and joyeuse is pretty awesome. with a good set of DD gear, you can pull 800+ vorpal blades pretty often. if you don't have a joyeuse, use anything else that looks good from AH.. tho i can't remember any other good ones atm.
i'm main handing hauteclaire and offhanding joyeuse when ever i party as pld.

thats awesome advice! since i was totally lvling pld for dd! (non sarcasm) being a 75drk, i have heca cap, heca boots, haub+1, assault earring, bushi (got it during inflation), vampire earring, company sword (capped sword on drk 240), still wearing ryl knights (nothing really better besides dusk,ares,valor) would there be any problem later if my shield is really low? or does that mean i have to plan on getting rdm sub (or merit on my PL rdm) for phalanx to skill up shield? i cant get any sword merits cuz im 8/8 scythe 8/8 h2h 4/4 gsword. i do have a mercurial sword is is fun to use as a weak soboro and an unlocked subduer waiting ;x /sam is pretty fun

Nah, not a problem. A lot of PLDs dont have capped shield when they hit 75. Especially in an age were /NIN + Dual Weild is the way to go in terms of pld exp. You'll eventually cap it during LS events/fights. If you find yourself bored and staring at your moogle spin, then run out to Den of Rancor and skill up.

Man, where do you people get these parties? Maybe I'm not high enough yet, but I'm always in parties that like to fight IT+++ mobs. I had to spend hours on war to skill up shield and I'm still a few behind...

Soil Gorget > all for vorpal. Thousands of Vorpal blades with both say soil > all.

The acc carries over to all hits, the damage boost is for the initial.

Hmm, guess I'm doing it wrong then since I play Pld as tank and not DD for exp parties.

Just for S&Gs, I'll post what I used at 70 and what I use now at 73 (to blood tank). I have DD stuff if/when needed, but I generally don't carry it for random invites.

Macha+1 (considering Justice Sword now for Spirits spam)
Admiral's Shield (waiting on Koenig price to drop since AH usually gets flooded and I'm in no rush)
Bibiki Seashell (Will use Virtue Stones if I go with Justice)
Aegiswhatever
Shield Torque/Parade Gorget (between pulls)
Intruder Earring -> Ethereal Earring
Buckler Earring
Gallant Surcoat/Vermillion Cloak (between pulls) -> Crimson Scale Mail (kidding, I just wear it for the looks lol)
Gallant Gauntlets -> Valor Gauntlets
Herc Ring
Bomb Queen Ring
High Breath Mantle/Boxer's Mantle (Usually use this post 71 with Warwolf)/Resentment Cape (when party is ending in ~10mins and HB wore)

I usually have no trouble holding hate and main curing myself without having MP issues if I have a Rdm for Refresh.

FYI I love my Trance Belt, but a) I killed the NMs for it, and b) I never wear it for merit, since I DW DD /nin.

Just bring like 3-4 friends (depending on jobs) up to Mount Zhaylom the next time you spy a level 1 Troll Besieged coming. The lower level Besieged, the easier they are. At level 8, they have party aggro (we tried sac pulling the one, but they all came a-runnin anyway, even though the puller was solo), they refuse to sleep more than a few seconds, take minimal damage, and are HUEG LIEK XBOX. They wiped me and my friends a few times as level 8s. Then we lost the Astral Candy, incoming level 1, and we massacred them with like 4 people. They slept fine, were squishy, didn't link, and they were SO TINY! Cutest trolls I've ever seen!!!

PLD being DD /nin isn't exactly what I leveled the job for either, but I find it fun nonetheless. Sure, I like me a traditional overhunting meritparty, but it's much more convenient to just force my friends to take me to colibri camp or the mire, and rake in the exp/hour.

As for the /rdm sub, you'll want to get it eventually anyway, if you plan on doing endgame tanking with your PLD. It's of course situational, so depending on what you wanna use your PLD for, you might not need it.

Since you mentioned trolls, I'll mention that Troll beseiged is really nice for Shield skill ups. Just find a Mnk and hopefully you can hold hate on them. When they 2hr, just use your's.

Another good thing about blood tanking is the shield skill ups. The entire time I don't think I've been more than 10 levels behind cap (which was right after I leveled).

Any proof to this? The general consensus was they only affected the first hit. I'd love to believe it if there was some evidence floating around.

It's just eyeballing, but using Soil for Asuran seems to help my acc a lot more than it would if it only affected first hit. But yes, more documentation = better.
