Belkin has a really good guide to RDM/NIN tanking; a lot of the information found in it has already been mentioned in this thread but still worth a read in my opinion.

Now, I'm no tank but you will want the chainsaws when casting spells to boost/maintain your enmity level, and switch out to Terra for tanking.

I'm liking the Hexerei Cape (since I'm a cheap bastard to get Umbra >_>), and Jelly Ring (which you don't want to use on JoL for obvious reasons).

Hexerei cape is garbage. NQ Cheviot is better (and at night the effect is doubled, so 10% less physical damage taken) and if you want to use Hexerei Cape for Magic Defense then you can just use Lamia Mantle +1 (Which is better as well).

Oh, didn't notice Lamia can be used by RDM, yeah thats a way better choice for RDM tank. I don't do RDM tank though.

Forget Terra's/Earth Staff, you'll almost never get hit if the mob has Slow 2 and Elegy and you can share hate well. Swift Belt is nice but not necessary. I use AF1 hat full-time personally, that plus Haste and double March will make recast times easily manageable. I have more fun on PLD tanking, but for HNMs I have to admit RDM is a lot easier and more self-reliant. Just for the record, I use:

    Macu+1 / Macu+1 / Lamian Kaman
    AF1 Hat / Harmonia's / Ethereal / Loquacious
    AF1 Body / W.Hands / Sattva / BQ Ring
    High Breath / Warwolf-Swift / W.Legs / Marine Boots

Not impressive (saving for Dusk Gloves) but it gets the job done. Good luck!

Unless you are fighting something that will be dead in less than a couple of minutes, you shouldn't have any trouble whatsoever holding hate off a pld even if they have the best gear in the game. (as long as your own gear/playstyle is adequate) Of course I've seen rdm tanking butchered so bad that it's no wonder some still don't realize its potential. (such as a few rdms on bahamut spamming bio3 in errant gear for hate)

    Two more questions:

Should I bother trying to put together some sort of resist sets, or just try for magical damage -#%/MDB?

What sort of food is recommended? I typically use Marron Glace for almost everything(Elvaan MP and whatnot), should I look into more defensive foods like Tav Salad/Tacos?

Personally as a Taru i use pescatora or tacos. Pescatora can get expensive, though.

OK, you caught my hyperbole. It is more like one of the 12 minute Adult Swim shows. (Not hyperbole.)

    Re: RDM Tankage Advice

If you think RDM takes longer than 2-3 minutes to build hate, there are 2 possible problems:

    1. You are misinformed
    2. Your RDM/NIN's suck

Hell, last Fafnir we claimed was at 96% in about 10 seconds with hate still on the tanks (And they kept it throughout the whole 15 minute fight). So basically if you think RDM needs more than 30 SECONDS you are mistaken. That is all.

    Re: RDM Tankage Advice

It's really easy, but don't cry too much when you get two-shotted by any of the hard-hitting monsters (Tiamat, Khimaira, etc.).
I've seen PLD's die just as fast. Not like either job can do anything about Tiamat double attacking for 750 each time. I think Stoneskin and Phalanx will negate more damage over the course of these fights than blocking, Sentinel or Rampart (Unless you had an Aegis). Anybody who uses the "paper thin" argument is ignorant.

Sorry I get a little worked up when people try to discredit RDM tanks.

Just responding to the magic part, but I'm pretty sure that Hexerei is marginally (and I mean very marginally) better than Lamia +1 even under assumptions considered more favorable to the Lamia+1, aside from being capped. If 3% damage reduction is only -7/256 (rather than -8/256 which it could potentially be), and the only other magic damage reduction the RDM has is Shell 5 1/3 (higher Shell and other gear making Hexerei even better) and the only MDB is the 12 from job trait (higher MDB making lamia +1 relatively worse), then the reduction from Hexerei is 3.6% while the reduction from Lamia is 3.4%. Of course Resentment cape wins by far for those purposes in situations where it's functional, but that probably goes without saying.

Out of curiosity, did they use Chainspell to build that hate at all, or just a normal Sleep/Blind/Dispel cycle?
