Isn't there still some useful spot left? Doctor, cook, musician, navigator, shipbuilder, inventor, historian...can't think of what else would be "necessary" I guess. And Fishman does work for the whole tolerance bit to give them more diversity.

It is probably ten including Luffy, because Blackbeard's crew also stands at ten. Balance of power, etc. The only way Luffy gains more crew after this is if Teach gets more people on his side prior to the ultimate showdown.
Damn the post-timeskip stuff was really a tease. In the end I hoped for something more bad-ass (like the whole crew one-shotting their respective fake members) instead of pacifistas getting wrecked (which was cool too, don't get me wrong).
I also find the over-all pacing to be agonizing for some reason. Although ever since the Luffy flashback started the anime has done a great job at making use of the source material imo. I hope they'd do a longer filler already though.
I don't think they can really fit in filler until the end of fishman island arc, luckily since it's ending in the manga soon they'll be able to finish the arc and make up a bit of filler so hopefully they can do some decently paced OP. Since Hulu gets me subtitled OP, I do occasionally watch the anime again.
You get a nice view of the SH Crew's advancement strength wise in the Fishmen Island fights at the end of the arc. So you'll get to it eventually, lol
I think Zoro is the first mate.
If that's the case the Jimbei can be tactical operations.
Jinbei's the crew lifeguard.
If you think about it, it fits. Half the crew is completely useless in water, Jinbei is practically unbeatable there.
He is. They try to not make this too clear by having a Zoro vs Sanji rivalry, but Zoro is the Rayleigh to Luffy's Gol D. Roger.
I can see Jinbei being the token fishman and tactical water fighter. Not really an official place, but oh well, can't think of what other role is really crucial. I remember Luffy making the "We need a musician!" joke often early on, but I guess that was first beaten by a Cook, then a doctor, then a shipwright.
I've been thinking about this for a bit. Luffy doesn't seem to have much more of a goal aside from finding One Piece. I think actually finding it would kill all the purpose he has in the world. It just seems very unlikely to me that he would make it to the end of the serie. He's the type of protagonist I could see dying at the very end. He's not going to become mature without Oda shitting over the whole show, that's for sure. What's he gonna do afterwards? Live happily ever after? Become cool and iconic figure like gold roger?
It just doesn't sound like Luffy tbh.
Luffy likely isn't dying at the very end, simply because Roger did that one, and I think it's be shitting over the spirit of the show if history really did repeat itself perfectly. I can see Luffy essentially getting rid of the World Government, on purpose or not, before he finds One Piece. And either some happy ever after epilogue or it ends with them just sailing off towards the island "confirmed" to have OP.
That's assuming that finding One Piece is the end of it all.
What few, tantalizing bit's of Robin's part in the quest have been shown/hinted at/stated suggest that whatever One Piece is, it will change the world.
I hope it's not a gigantic Chekhovs Gun , given how fond Oda is of recalling things from years ago.
I don't think we've seen it or anything directly about it yet though. I doubt that it's purely pirate treasure however.
According to Rayleigh OP/Raftel seems to have opened up a few possibilities of what to do next, Roger's decision seems to have been to leave it to the next generation to decide. Then if we look at what WB says OP being found is going to lead to a war. So I would imagine the end of OP will be after the SH find OP with a three way war between the WG, Dragon, and the SH + allies, all with different views depending on how they read the lost history (the SH being the more complete view thanks to them actually having/seeing OP).
