I'd prefer it if they didn't retcon the bear to be a shambles survivor. I liked it when he was just a bear who could talk. And fight. Because bears are hilarious.

I might have been reading too much into what Smoker said, but it seems like haki can block the effect of shambles. It'd be cool if there was some kind of straw-hatted character that also had the ability to instantly defeat anyone with weak haki within a decently sized area. They could be rivals or something.

No, Oda just revealed that through this chapter's cover story.

It was mentioned he was injured by the escaping level 6 prisnors and BB.

My guess is he joined the marines like Sentomaru did or he is now committing himself to tracking down all the escaped prisnors as some sort of bounty hunter.

Thought not, but I think it was a safe assumption that he'd probably stand down after the breakout, to catch those that escaped, or even just to settle the score with Shiloh. I'm definitely excited that we'll probably see more of him in the future. I just find the toilet bound bat man a joy to watch.
