Heck maybe it was possibly even Monkey D. Dragon or other Revolution fighters that opened the gates. This would be a perfect time for the Revolution to strike a blow against the World Government and we have yet to see anything to show them doing stuff in response to this war. Except maybe the bridge isn't being protected thus why the resistance is freeing everyone including Robin there at this time.

For the gate, my guess was Coby since they are trying to give everyone their moment of fame (and we havent seen him since it opened?) , but I would prefer if it was a more important character.

We've seen him after it opened, think we saw him trying to run from the battle(when he sees Akainu stop others from running) and when luffy arrives.
Also it doesn't seem like it was Garp or Coby they both seemed surprised to see him (Garp's face doesn't look like he wants him there):

Marco leaps at Squardo, and Squardo then reveals his reason. During this war, Akainu contacted Squardo about an agreement between Sengoku and Whitebeard.
Which is that Ace and the Whitebeard pirate crew will not be killed. In exchange for that the New World pirates will be annihilated., or something like that.
In the past, Squardo’s own pirate crew was destroyed by Roger.

The marines, knowing that, expected Squardo to go along with their plan.
And so they broke the news that Ace is Roger’s son. So that’s why Sengoku revealed the connection between Ace and Roger. (The implication between that Squardo isn’t a big Roger fan.)
And this explains Squardo’s attack. In actuality the Pacifista army had only been attacking New World pirates.

Whitebeard, who knew all of this, says something like “Even so, they’re all my sons!”.
Even though Marco is hit by a crewmate, he looks at Whitebeard taking a full on hit and confirms that he’s weakening. (I’m not confident in how I translated/interpreted this part, forgive me if it’s off.)
Sensing this, Whitebeard says “It’s impossible to be the strongest forever. Every person’s got a heart.”
And so this time the marines’ dirty plan enrages Whitebeard. It looks like Sengoku is also prepared, and the battle will begin once more.

Before the battle the deal that Sengoku and Whitebeard made was agreed, that the new world pirates would be annihilated in the battle, hence Squado didn't want that, and stabbed Whitebeard for what he thought was a "betrayal"

This is too easily ignored, One Piece's pacing means Oda gets more done taking three weeks out of eight off than lesser WSJ authors accomplish taking no breaks for a year.

granted, perhaps its better than Bleach has been in the past, but you all seem to go back to the same old dead horse to try and compare it to other manga.
an apple with mold on it is still moldy! take your crappy slow story progression and eat it like most every other shonen manga!

Plenty has happened in the last 2months... their were a couple of chapters that were slow, but they were somewhat necessary to show the setting of the war. And I've been pretty pleased with most of those chapters anyway. I don't think the story is progressing slow at all.

Maybe you're just getting bored of One Piece.

You are insane. In the last 10 chapters alone we've learned how strong WB's crew is, the true nature of the relationship between two critical OP characters, watched Shichibukai fight each other, learned the ultimate fate of Kuma and have seen a ton of comic relief amidst an all out war at Marinford. If you find OP lately at a slow, dragging-on pace then you really haven't been reading it since the Baroque Works arc, when the pacing was much, much slower.
