Battle System Improvements (02/22/2008) - (Nothing good)

    http://www.playonline.com/pcd/topics.../2901/2901.jpg
Improvements to the battle system have been scheduled for the next version update.

    Battle Music

Up until now, battle music would only be triggered when the player executes the "attack" command on an enemy. This has meant that battle music is not triggered when other commands, such as "magic," are used instead.

The development team has made considerations for battle music to be triggered based on factors such as distance from the enemy, and whether or not a party member is engaged in battle. However, it was raised that triggers that would cause unexpected and abrupt changes in BGM would not be well received by our players.
Furthermore, depending on platform, sound playback can be a hardware intensive process. Frequent changes in music would result in lowered hardware performance, e.g. a delay in log messages. For these reasons, the battle music system has been left untouched until now.

For the next version update, however, our programmers have been working hard to make improvements to the battle music system become reality. These adjustments should allow battle music to play if you are within the vicinity of a party member currently engaged with an enemy, even if you yourself have not executed the "attack" command. This way, even those who play with long range attack characters such as mages, will not have to miss out on an essential atmospheric element in the game. While it may not be possible to account for all scenarios, due to the nearly limitless ways in which battles can be initiated; we believe this will improve things significantly.

    Monster Name Text Color

A new text color will be added to monster names, in order to differentiate those that are engaged with an alliance member as opposed to those engaged with players from another party. The names of monsters being engaged by an alliance member will now be displayed as reddish-purple.

    Macro and Marker Data

Until now, it has been possible to store character macro and marker data only on the hard disk drives of players' game machines. However, the next version update will make it possible to also store this data on PlayOnline's servers. Now you can enjoy the convenience of using your very own user-defined macros no matter where you go!

If you know how many friends play at my house sometimes or how often I use another persons PC or PS2 you know this is good. So yes I actually like this .

@ Ryko : Yes they probably can check for it, IF YOU safe them "there". I will do it for sure because I have nothing to hide and now I can start playing on PS2 again with other jobs beside BLM . (Was too lazy to put my new RDM, WHM, PLD, NIN Macros there too)

So if you have for example " /console exec NINdayJin.txt as your macro, that will get saved to PlayOnline, and then you will be fucked?

If I have to go back to hitting 4 macros every time I wan't to WS, god help them.

It looks like it's optional, so you're only potentially fucked if you choose to upload the macros.

I think it optional. I HOPE it is. Keeping my windower macros and backing up my USER and scripts folder once a month > Not using my lovely macros. (They'll notice the IME plugin text and .txt file usage that way, and god help me I love my little stars.)

Re: Battle System Improvements (02/22/2008) - (Nothing good)

    I like the changes.

The music thing never really bothered me because I have the OST and get to listen to it. Its nice in that as a mage I'll get to actually listen to battle music without having to pull out my weapon. Welcome change, not necessary but nice..

The Alliance claim thing should be useful too.. because sometimes its hard to tell if the mob is with an alliance member or someone else. Using /as helps at times but there's always those complicated hate scenarios where the guy with hate isnt the guy with claim, and so on.. Also a welcome change, but not necessary..

The macro/marker thing tho.. OMG its about time. I've always wished that there was a way to save macros on the server so that I didn't have to copy them over to my PS3 to play on (i still havent gotten it done since it was such a hassle). Also, it allows u to play FFXI wherever you go, on different computers, and without the need to back up macros when you format the PC or reinstall FF for whatever reason... and people don't have to worry about having to fix up macros for their character when they play from a temporary position..

all very welcome changes. not necessarily game-breaking or omgwtf, but very pleasant changes.

I never bothered making a full macro set on PC for the same reason.

I'm sure it will be optional since there's probably alot that have different macro sets for accounts on various consoles (PC, PS2, 360, PS3) and you'll most likely get to choose which one gets saved/overwritten.

    I was praying for:

"Your character will no longer be locked for 2-3 seconds while a spell/song is being cast upon your character, if you decide to engage/disengage"

i think it'll probably be something like there'll be a button for you to 'upload and save macros on the server', then you'll be able to retrieve it (and overwrite) the present set u have on a particular console.. cos for people who already have various existing sets on various consoles.. they'll need to pick 1 set which they want.. and since it supposed to be optional.. they probably will introduce it in a less intrusive way

Maybe it will be similar to the shift+ctrl+alt+B / R thing you can do on the character selection screen for PC version, I think. ;o

Re: Battle System Improvements (02/22/2008) - (Nothing good)

meh, the best thing about levelling is that most traditional camps are in barren zones/wastelands without music and just sounds which is actually more atmospheric. Its soothing listening to the forest-sounds in jugner while waiting for campaign, for example. Guess i'l just turn the music setting down or off. And in areas with music, like castle zvhal its nicer to have the background music ongoing repeatedly as opposed to battle music interrupting just for the whole spookiness x_x

changing the text for an alliance claimed mob is all swell, but my <bt> macro's probably still wont work in an alliance or is that just me lol?
