Game made by senior Digipen students, just won the IGF Best Student Game award a couple nights ago. Page has a link to the dowload. I'm a fan of rhythm games, so I don't know how many people would echo the sentiment, but if they smoothed out the rough edges and had a professional crew working on this with them, this is totally something I'd buy. The music is really catchy.

If any major companies get interested in these guys we might get Portal all over again.

Finished the first 7 acts on "tricky" and I have to say that it sucks. Good music, sure. The gameplay is horrible. I didn't realize that Beatmania could be tedious and boring, but these guys pulled it off. The whole aesthetic theme combined the "trippy" phrases after each room give me the impression that the developers played the last level of Rez and said to themselves, "Whoa, imagine a whole game like that!" If Tetsuya Mizuguchi were dead, he'd be rolling in his grave.

I had alot of fun with this game. It's definitely worth downloading.

I've never played Beatmania, so I can't comment on the above statements. But there are a lot of cool elements in this game and it's a blast to play. I just wish they had support for a controller, using the keyboard is kinda unintuitive and my hands felt cramped.

But, like I said, it's a definite download.

It's like Beatmania, but they decided to water down the gameplay, put in crappy BGA's, return the UI to 1990, and...just, gah. I think i'm going to head to the arcade now for some 8th Style to remedy this blight.

I think that they did a pretty good job. It's not professionally made it's a senior student game. They aren't given the latest graphics engine or anything like that you have to build everything from scratch pretty much. Most student games try to keep the UI simple and familiar for a multitude of reasons.

That being said, I've never played beatmania but it did seem like Rez mixed with DDR to me =/

Nobody plays it...because it's 8th style. They don't seem to get that after 3-4 years of playing the exact same game, people want something new. Same goes for GF/DM 11/10th there...i'd kill for a V2 machine even (V4 prz?), but they refuse to maintain it even, so nobody ever plays it because it's old and in terrible condition.

Well yeah, like Aerin said, of course it's not going to compare to Rez or look as good as Beatmania IIDX13. It's a student game. The only software you're allowed to use is what's on the Digipen computers (even if you have freeware open source stuff on your laptop, if the computers at school don't have it, you can't use it to make your game, period) and you have to build every aspect of the game, engine included, from scratch. The teams are also of only four people - I think they did an amazing job given the constraints.

The idea, afaik, was to make something like a 2-handed beatmania where you move the character with one hand and play notes with the other. I'm still impressed with the music they have made, considering everybody in the team is a programmer.

I like it, the only problem is my keyboard can't handle more than 2 buttons being pressed at once or it doesn't register any of them, so yeah kinda gimped my experience a little (was wondering why I kept missing those triplet beats)

Back to stepmania for me then

it definitely reminded me of the final stage of rez, but otherwise a really fun game
