    Website Setup

I'm in need of some advice here. My LS leader purchased webspace at http://www.hostmonster.com, they had very good reviews and a good price, however I am having issues with the control panel. It lags out and doesn't work so often that I can't even get a PHP Portal mod installed.

Is there another well-known webserver we should look into moving to?
    and/or
Is there a way to do anything and everything I could possibly need without using the control panel?

    Thanks for reading~

    FTP Client.
GoDaddy if you have to use web-based apps. Used them before and didn't have any problems with it.

Out of curiosity, what exactly does FileZilla not cover for your?

Regarding your CP issue, are you uploading a large file or files at one time via their file manager?

My issues are not with uploading because I use Filezilla for that, my issues are with file management specifically when installing PHP mods. PHP installations require file copying and editing which I cannot do in this FTP client.

Unless the webhost allows shell access, you have to do everything locally and upload the changes back again, typically. If it allows shell access and you know your way around linux basics, login via SSH (use http://www.putty.org/) and do it that way. If no shell access, edit the file locally, and upload it back again. Copies are made by downloading the file and uploading to the other location. Make sure the file is saved as a UNIX filetype if thats what it was originally in (the text editors I'll mention in a second should watch out for that for you), because if you take a linux/unix file and tweak it in something like Wordpad in windows you stand a good chance of having windows add in some hidden characters for endlines that will break it once its back on the server.

You can use Ultraedit (http://www.ultraedit.com) to do the editing, if you feel like paying a little; it has direct open and save to ftp functionality. I've used it for about 8 years now and love it, but for casual use just for this I think there are some free alternatives that can do the same. You might look into the Wikipedia page for text editors (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_text_editors).

Personally, I've used dreamhost for about 2.5 years now, after switching from 1&1, and I'm very pleased. A decent webpanel, and full shell access to let me do stuff my way when I want to. If you wanted to switch I can give you a referral code that'll net you a discount, I think. But so long as the host supports the php/mysql versions you need, and you can get the stuff working, theres probably no reason to bother switching and spending more money.

Then just re-upload files you've edited on your PC, to the server.

I too switched to DreamHost from 1and1 about a year ago and have been very happy. I have an account at HostMySite for a project w/ some friends. HMS is also a decent host.

    As to the OP's question:

I looked at hostmonster.com's site. One of the features listed is SSH Access. If they give you SSH, they should also give you a text editor, most likely VI, Emacs, and Pico/Nano. Also, if you have Shell access, you can use wget to download the files you need. Wget is simple to use -- wget http://server/path/to/file.zip . Once its down, you can use the unzip command (if available, it should be) to open the package.

Otherwise, you'll be stuck w/ the ftp down/up method of making changes.

As to things you can only do via the control panel -- adding e-mail addresses, setting webroot, any changes to DNS, creating new DBs, etc, are probably control panel only things.

Send a PM to Aikar, he runs faservers who host the BG Wiki (for free I believe) and I'm sure he'll cut you a good deal for a hosting package for your LS.
