Inability to Access POL Mail

Well, it's about time I helped solve this mystery.

I have access to a friend's character, who never plays, but a few months back received a disgusting amount of PoL mail... Ended up being 166. It is driving me crazy not being able to delete these things, and they continue to flash. I know you can disable that, but what I really want to know is why we both can't access the inbox. Both he and I have tried to get to the 'send/receive' area, and every time we do, the password is wrong. He swears he has set it to what his FFXI password is, and yet, it still doesn't work, and it's been almost a year and they're still sitting there, glaring at me with their 2/3s-evil blink, you think it's stopped, but lo! It's up again, and on and on, forever more!

... Anyway, anyone else have this problem/any suggestions other than waiting on the phone for hours? I'd 'email' them, but they send it directly to your PoL mail, and all I need is another one...
