You broke the law, as minor as it may be, and you got caught. Suck it up and deal with it, it's only $50.

If the crosswalk is like..right there and you still didn't use it (in plain view of the cops) then that's pretty much askin' for it (in my opinion). I'd be more understanding if the only available crosswalk was like a block or two down.
What is the first thing you are supposed to do when making a right turn on green while driving?
Turn on your signal 100 yards in advance.
...what?
low how you get a ticket for breaking the law and you complain that it's a sign our entire government is stooping to low levels
Grow a pair

Taking a right turn out of the lot (ie: into the neighborhood via residential) was illegal, but left (ie: to the main road) was legal. If you went out the other exit, you could turn left or right, as you were on the main road, no problem. This meant you could exit via the main road, and then legally turn into the residentially street and proceed down it as if you had made the illegal right turn.
Cops would sit at the end of the road and pull people over who were exiting on the residential and ignoring the "no right turn sign". My friend felt like screwing with them one day, so he took a video camera and taped himself exiting via the main road and legally turning onto the residential street. Cop pulled him over, assuming he made an illegal turn, and he showed him the video tape. Officer had the best expression i've ever seen on his face after that![]()

Yeah i know this is bullshit. I know exactly what kind of street you're talking about. But be glad it's only $50, a friend of mine payed $115 for the same ticket. Learn the lesson and move on.

Did this take place in a more Urban Area by any chance?
I've heard of jaywalking and all that shit, but the cops couldn't be bothered around here with that. I've never even seen a cop outside of his car, unless he has someone pulled over already. I'm in a more rural area however.
When I was in Highschool we had cops waiting across the straight grabbing people for speeding passed the school, they didn't give 2 shits where anyone crossed over the road.
When I take trips down to Manhattan I see cops all the time standing in the intersection writing people tickets for "blocking the box". This makes me smile b/c it's one of the things that piss me off the most. I could see a cop giving someone a Jaywalking ticket down in NYC, but I don't think anyone is retarded enough to attempt to cross a road there not at an intersection lol.
Being related to a few Cops I can tell you for a fact that at least some stations do have quotas. They said it has to do with funding from the state, ie proving your station needs to be there and not shut down. I imagine its much more prevalent in rural areas as opposed to urban areas.
Im glad they fined you, now youll be one less person walking out in the middle of the street slowing me down while driving. But really, you were breaking the law, even though it was a small crime.
My twin sister hit a guy jaywalking just the other day.
Doing 45, in a Jeep.
The pic below is what the guy's abdomen and hips did to the nose, a little further up you can see where his head hit the hood.
You'll be fine, its not like there's a law against these things for a reason or anything.
Tackiest Jeep I have ever seen.
God I wish the UK was more like America more and more. Over here there are simply no laws regarding jaywalking. You have to be doing something really retarded to get a tug from the law here and even then you'd just get a stern ticking off. No penalty or punishment at all.
The reason I'm so incensed by such activities is because I'm a cab driver here. I see so much bad driving AND so many bad pedestrians every week it's untrue. But it's all one sided here... if anything happens, no matter what it maybe, the finger of suspicion is immediately pointed squarely at the motorist.

Pretty stupid law. If you have the ability to walk you should be able to look both ways like you were taught from day 1 of walking in public life. The law makes sense because idiots are rampant everywhere apparently and run out in the road.
Like someone said earlier, show up to court, the cop doesn't, you get off hurray.

Depends on the circumstance. If the guy was seriously injured or killed, he or his family may attempt to sue you, but your lawyer could just pull the "he ran in front of my car" defense. Same thing for if the police investigate it. If they find that you were driving appropriately and not recklessly, and this guy dashes in front of your car from a hidden place and you could never have anticipated it or slowed in time, then you're pretty much off the hook.Originally Posted by Charla
As for quotas, in general, what happens when there just isn't enough crime during one particular month? Everyone parks appropriately and no one jaywalks. Perhaps you (the OP) should stage a protest of the police department by rallying everyone together and picking one month to not violate any pedestrian or traffic laws. That'll show 'em.
