ffxi wikia w/ trojans?

FFXIclopedia made me want to stab myself earlier, because every page would churn for a few seconds and then Iceape (the continuation of the Mozilla, not Firefox, codebase that was renamed due to some lame trademark crap) would pop up the "This script seems to be infinitely looping, do you want to stop it?" message. This is on Linux, however. I wonder if it was something shady or just broken (I thought it might be an issue with their new skin). I was getting it on every page, but it seems gone now.

This seems to be a result of their new skin. I went there and every second you are on a page it increases the memory usage. It gets to a certain point (about 400k) and then some windows OS files get corrupted. If you do a restart, your chkdsk should automatically replace the corrupted files (mine did), but I do not recommend visiting the site.

Edit: It appears to be fixed. I never did encounter any form of trojan though, just the nasty script error.

Wow that's a really bad error. Even if they did fix it, overwriting memory is a huge no-no.

Agreed. It's still a fine source of info and I use it on a regular basis... so I hope there's no virus there. (Even with Firefox and adblock/noscripts, I still worry.)

Well, to each their own, I guess. I just don't use it out of principle due to the donation scam their admins were running, but in light of the rash of viruses and keyloggers that've popped up in the last few months, I've limited my FFXI sites to only a few that I trust. Namely BG and BGwiki, since I know that if anything like that came up on a BG page, the admins would be on top of it before I even get a chance to see it.

A question but, would using a seperate laptop to browse sites / info help not getting ur shit hacked on ur main computer if u did nothing but play safe.

It'd certainly help a lot. It wouldn't be foolproof if you were using a LAN for example, some viruses/trojans can exploit network shares and so on. But yeah, if you used a machine not directly connected to your main computer, you'd go a long way toward ensuring security.

I am using firefox with noscript, the only site on otherwiki i have allowed is otherwiki.
Everything is up to date, i wouldn't post unless i didn't know why i was getting these. I'll never use IE, i know its stupid.

The trojan was from the google syndicate ads. This wasn't some RMT hack of otherwiki, but it was definitely a keylogger.

If you're using firefox with the noscript addon, you should be fine.
