    Crysis can blow me

... fucking game. Destroyed TWO power supply units in the space of an hour last Friday. 500W the machine was built with went rice crispies after about 5 minutes of playing the game on high setting. So I run down to the local comp supply store and buy a replacement 500W, thinking perhaps the original was made on a Friday or something. This one goes in, and blows a resistor on the fucking menu while I was backing the graphics off to medium.

So I ordered a new Apevia Warlock 750W PS and it just got installed. God I'm scared to try and load Crysis up. This one was fucking expensive.

As a side note, I never realized how much of a crutch having a computer is... I was a wreck this week, unable to check email, use AIM, view bank records, and all the other shit I need every day, like porn.

I was without one for three weeks, and I pretty much do all of my school work from home now (ie AutoCAD, SketchUp, Photoshop, inDesign) and I almost killed my landlord. The shitty wiring in the house caused a bad serge which fried both my Power Supply and Mother Board. I feel your pain. This was also about a month before my portfolio was due so yeah......

sounds like your videocard is too powerful for the power supplies you purchased

get a corsair 620W or higher, or thermaltake 650W or higher, the corsair is one of the top 3 PSU's on the market

i have the thermaltake 650W toughpower and haven't had any power issues, and play crysis with absolutely no problems

It fried my old video card. Because it was the minimum requirement... My new one runs it good on medium settings now though.

I feel your pain man. Just last week my hard drive went emo on me, but I was able to back up all my shit before it crapped on me. Not having a laptop was hell, specially since I have a bunch of shit due next week.

    PS: Running knoppix atm lol

Not to epeen, but my machine is hardly inferior, unless we are calling newegg's most current stock the standard. This machine was built at Christmas with solid components. Inferiority is relative. It's an Athlon 2.8GHz 64 bit FX-62 Dual-core on an ASUS M2N-32 board and 4Gb of Corsair 800 MHz DDR2 RAM(fastest RAM the board will support, up to an 8Gb capacity). The GPU is an EVGA built nVidia 8800 GTS, 640Mb. Really, I think Crysis was the cause, the effect being a huge draw from the GPU on the power supply. Either way, if a 750W won't get the job done, I have other issues.

Hmm i wonder if Crysis broke my video card. It started scrambling the picture after a like a week and nothing would fix it. At least I beat it, longest credits ever.

Did you buy some random no name psu? A good 500-600w psu can handle your specs. It's not really about the wattage.

    Re: Crysis can blow me

The original PSU was an Apevia unit that was installed in the Apevia case when it was ordered. The second one was a lolRaidmax that I picked up at the local 'puter store(yeah bad move, but I was in a bind). The one I just installed tonight is another Apevia, but a 750W.

    wtf is an apevia?

Did you miss the part where the PSU is the most important piece of a computer?

yea, you got a crap psu, and looks like your second one sucked as well. if it wasn't crysis, would have been another 3d intensive game to pop your psu. just be thankful it was that and not your motherboard.

    Re: Crysis can blow me

Weird, my power supply just went out a couple days ago as well. Was just some no name psu that I had around the house from an old computer that I originally put in because my previous no name psu went out (they were like 500W and 450W respectively too lol). This time I actually learned from my mistake and bought a new Antec 600W.

Watts means nothing. What's more important is the amps on the 12+ volt rail.

I'll admit I know very little about power supplies (and recent tech as a whole... I haven't upgraded my computer for a couple years now). Whats a good figure for amps on +12V?

If you really want to learn about power supplies I'd have to send you in the direction of http://www.hardforum.com/forumdisplay.php?f=93

They really seem to know what they are talking about.

Reading a link on that site about choosing PSUs and looking at the one I bought actually just gave me a whole lot more confidence with the power supply I got.
