No, sorry buddy, it doesnt work that way. I'd LOVE to see a group of pussy white dorks outside IRL using the word nigga to joke around with. It doesn't happen in public places without being called out or, depending on the person who heard it, knocked the fuck out. Just try it, go out to a sports event or something with a large group of diversity and start talking out loud about how "this stupid nigga" or how "your friend is a crazy nigga". I guarantee you will be the only dumbasses there who thinks its fucking cool or no big deal.Originally Posted by Darus Grey

LOL did you even read his post? everything you just said has nothing to do with it...
and lol @ calling a linguistics professor ignorant
This is what I was replying to, actually. The rest of the post wasn't even aimed directly at him. I was basically giving another example of how its not OK for everyone to use it and people SHOULD be offended by this type of use.Originally Posted by Darus Grey

I tend to hate white people much easier (I'm white as an exploding star) than others, but when you average it out I hate pretty much everyone equally.
The problem with the racism label is that you only have to hate 1 black person to be racist.
Nothing about my actions would make me a racist, but people judge me based on the colour of the skin of the person I don't like.
I submit that people who use the term racist are themselves just as racist as they perceive me to be, if not more.
Ryko, I'm going to have to respectfully disagree with you on this point. The word simply doesn't strictly define blacks anymore. Wafik just told you that Lebanese people in Australia call each other "nigga". I guess the UK and Australian folks use the word "chav" for willfully ignorant and socially irresponsible dirtbags. In America, that class of people identifies itself as "niggas", due to no small part I'm sure of the overruse of the word in the hiphop scene. Race is irrelevant, white, black, hispanic, lebanese... the "chavs" of America are all calling themselves nigger today. I know you've heard it, you're from NY right? How could you not? I made the comment in my post that I hate people based not on the color of their skin, but the content of their character(or in the case of bottomfeeders, the lack thereof). Nigger is just a word, and it's a word that should reflect the classness inability of common white people in the Civil War era to properly pronounce "negro", but I already mentioned this. Now, as for me personally: I don't use the word nigger except on rare occasions. I don't use the word in front of anyone unless I know for a fact they aren't offended. As someone else said, words only have the power you give them. Out of respect for others, I don't spout the word like American rappers do.Originally Posted by Ryko
To summarize, race is irrelevant. I try to follow King's ideal and make judgments based on content of character. However, it's common knowledge that humans make their first judgment based on what they see, for the simple fact that vision is usually the first sensory input you receive. You can normally see a person before you hear them or smell them, or get to know them. With that being said, when a person has the same appearance as a certain group of people,(thug, dork, guidouche, rich kid... pick one) there is an automatic initial association with that group in the mind of the observer. Everyone does this, no exceptions.
I'm willing to discuss this with you, but don't call me a retard or a racist again please.
You said nothing there that disagreed with me.No, sorry buddy, it doesnt work that way. I'd LOVE to see a group of pussy white dorks outside IRL using the word nigga to joke around with. Stupid people empowering the word perpetuate it's use. I didn't say it's common usage is entirely accepted but it is most assuredly transitioning towards that, and the sooner that happens, the sooner the word loses it's power and becomes meaningless. When black people fight this trend they only increase how long it takes.
The LISTENER creates the offense. This is a sound linguistic principle here. If the listener chooses not to be offended(and being offended IS a choice the listener makes), then the word has no power. This is especially preposterous in a 3rd party situation (an asian man calling a white man a nigger, and a black man who over-hears it gets offended and reacts. It is obvious being used out of original context, and another listener makes a choice).
If you don't believe me than listen to ANOTHER linguist discuss this topic and how linguistic cycles change and TABOO creates offense and attributes power to slurs.

Really, people who think like you only make the problem worse. Open your mind and realize that.
And I'm not trying to be insulting to you, just inform you.
Edit: kinda missed the boat with responses hereBut really, listen to that radio broadcast, even if you think I'm fulla shit about knowing what I'm talking about, thats another PHD in linguistics saying exactly what I am.
Yes, those people are racist if they call you one based on their opinions alone. This has happened to me once before. I'd be at a concert or something and some dude is acting like a dick to someone. I'll call him out and tell him to knock it off, immediately they pull out the racist comments just because I'm a different skin color. However, all my friends know that I don't put up with anybody's shit and I will speak up if someone is in the wrong, regardless of who they are or what they look like.Originally Posted by Alleya

I just don't believe the uses and power of the word nigger is as simple as choosing to be offended by it or not. Its not like the uses of profanity and such. Its much more complicated due to its history and origin, in my opinion.Originally Posted by Darus Grey

I agree that people are the ones who give meaning to words, but as long as white people continue to use the word in a malicious manner, i'm going to continue to get offended by it. Either everyone stops, or the cycle continues. Laying the blame on blacks for "giving the word power" is just so lame that I can't even begin to wrap my head around it.
You're not going to appreciate it if someone calls you an idiot, ignorant, waste of human cells. When used in a malicious manner, nigger encompasses all those words into one. I'm not offended by the mere fact that he used the word, it's offensive because people use that word to describe a person based on a physical attribute that has absolutely no affect on a person's character.
TBH it really is just that simple. You cannot be offended unless you choose to be, otherwise your implying you have no control of your own thoughts, which I hope you do have control over.I just don't believe the uses and power of the word nigger is as simple as choosing to be offended by it or not.
That starts getting more into psychology and away from linguistics.
Darus: what's the point of watering down one racist term? It's not like racial slurs are going to go away before racism does, so you're basically trying to play musical chairs with slurs. Take the sting off nigger just so racists will start using coon instead? And then eventually rappers start using coon in their lyrics? And then dopey white kids on the internet and foreign hip-hoppers wanna use it too? And then you have people who don't hate black people, they just hate coons. Back to square one.
Experiment: White people will now replace the word nigger with the word "cupcake". Cupcake now has all the same connotations and meaning as the word nigger, for the duration of this experiment. For example: 50-Cent is a goddamned cupcake. God I hate cupcakes.
I could call you stupid a million times. Just because you choose not to be offended by it doesn't all of a sudden make the meaning of the word "stupid" magically transform into something else.Originally Posted by Darus Grey

I'm not going to recind my comments because I know they are accurate and factual. I have presented evidence as to such, so I know I am not an idiot, and your insult holds no power.
I practice what I preach.
You know Melch, you could just substitute ignorant instead of substituting cupcake, and it'd all make sense.
What part of not getting offended allows the word nigger to lose it's meaning. I'm not offended by the word 'asshole' but at the end of the day an "asshole" is always going to mean "asshole."Originally Posted by Darus Grey

That's basically what your asking for. We only have word's for that we know. If we stamp out the power of racial slurs one by one, in theory, we are slowly eroding away racism.
If we empower them, we only make it stronger.
This makes no sense to me. Who the hell's writing these linguistics books?Originally Posted by Darus Grey
