    Re: WiiFit

I think it's well worth the investment.

I've got a Gym membership, but to be honest the exercises on here are far different from what I typically do at the gym. The Yoga and Strength exercises are no joke. They will hopefully help me in an area that I rarely have time to work on at the gym (flexibility).

The charts they use for Underweight/Average/Overweight/Obese are a bit off since the game can't calculate muscle mass. If you're just an average body type it would be a bit more accurate.

As corny as it seems I kind of enjoyed the Short Run exercise, and I hate running with a passion. The ski jump is really fun too.

The thing I liked the most is that it got my g/f's parents off their asses. My g/f's dad is a heart attack survivor, and doesn't exercise at all. He put in a good 30 minutes yesterday, hopefully there's enough different activities to keep him occupied.

I bet it would be good for days off your normal routine or if it's raining. It doesn't look like something that's going to drop your weight by 30 pounds in a couple months though. I think quite a few people see it as that, though.

    Tricking people into losing weight?

Seriously though...the other half of getting in shape is eating right. WiiFit has no control over that. Some dumbass is going to think "Hey, I just did a bunch of exercise (in reality, probably burned 100 calories, if that), so now I can eat this giant slice of extra greasy pizza with no regrets (500+ calories)."

I guess it's better though to eat that pizza with some calories burned vs. the alternative of none.

Why not just play DDR? I have such a good resistance when it comes to cardio beacuse of DDR.

It's fun. It's a nice supplement to my normal gym routines - and I've always been nervous to take my first yoga class since I hate feeling stupid doing new stuff in groups, a few more tries on this and I might get over that.

Yes if you have major health issues this is not going to get you to 22 BMI alone. No one thing will.

    Gym+Diet+WiiFit > Gym+Diet > WiiFit > Couch/FFXI

    ymmv

It is geared towards the normal achievement paradigm (Oh hey I did that and unlocked a new mini game - cool), and tracks your progress over time, including new BMI updates when you want to do them. Other NPC's are in some of the activities cheering you on, or doing the routines with you (like step class). You get to pick a male or female trainer, and they do give you feedback as you are actually doing each exercise. You also get rated on how well you did (stars, rankings, etc.), and can strive to redo with better results. Again, oriented to take that gamer incentive and turn it into physical results.

Another cool feature, after calculating BMI you do some initial breathing/balance tests and it calculates your "physical age". IE, you are 25 but have the body of a 48 year old due to beer+pizza+games.

It also makes your on screen avatar "look" the weight/BMI that you actually are. You can lock your profile so only you can see the real truth if you like. If you already have a Wii, I'd see no reason not to get one.

It should be noted that BMI is an arcane measurement and should not really be relied on, at all. I'm not trying to say anything about the game good or bad, but it's possible to be in great shape and be "obese" by BMI standards, in fact if you lift weights at all, your BMI is probly listed as unhealthy.

if you want to really to get a good BMI and lose some weight in proper way, it is all about maintaining constant and a specific range of heart beat during workout.

    Re: WiiFit

Between the gym, martial arts (kempo, kung fu, and tai chi), yoga, and my home exercise bike I work out a lot. After getting Wii Fit I can say that this is a great little home workout device. It doesn't beat having a gym membership or practicing martial arts, but for those little workouts I like to do during my lunch break (I live close to work so I go home for lunch) or right when I wake up in the morning, it's fantastic!

Btw, the balance games are crazy hard... either that or I have terrible balance!
