Students, What do you do to get yourself to do homework?

Back in college, I found that making myself a list, and going through it one by one, crossing them out, made things easier. Visually, seeing things dwindle down helps and is somewhat motivating. Of course, back then, I was also bored to hell living alone hundreds of miles away from any friends or family, so I had time to kill.

I hardly ever did homework, but when I did, it was an early in the morning thing.

Depended on the class.

In most my classes if homework was worth 10% of grade or less I'd simply not do it and be happy with B+/A-(or frequently a solid A from extra credit activities) no one cares about grades anyways unless your in the top 5 or your going to graduate school(or have a scholarship/grant with grade requirements).

If it was worth 25% I'd simply just do it panic style. Writing projects the exception in that I'd do them as soon as reasonably possible once I knew about them.

Since I took primarily language courses and polysci during my undergrad years most the HW was a joke anyways.

I have some computer repair class questions to do (easy) and a bunch of physics work, most is back work from when I was out sick last week so idc about that, but I have a take home quiz due this monday first period, and I don't know how to do half of it because I was out sick the week previous.. won't end well.

I've been procrastinating on doing a paper on Les Misérables for novels class all weekend. I keep saying I'm about to start, so far I've watched two 90+ episode Let's Plays on youtube. It's due today, and it's 2 A.M

For me, I turn off the PC, and then I turn off the TV.

If it's a paper or something I might need some research or something off the internet for, then I use one of the other comp's in my house that are much shittier than mine and don't have any of the programs bookmarks or anything on them that mine does. This way there is really no distractions for me.

Drinking or getting high always helped as well, but I rarely drink any more, and I havent gotten high since around highschool I don't think.

I find that forcing myself to study doesn't do much at all, it just makes it miserable and hard to concentrate. To avoid procrastination I make sure I put my books right out in the open, where I look at least 3 or 4 times a day, so that I'm reminded that, "Yes, I have work to do." I usually can't do work in my room, since there are so may ways to get distracted. Turn off computers, cellphones if you have them, and anything else that might draw your attention, such as music or TV.

For me, I need to set away an hour or two for homework without distractions. If I'm distracted I won't do the work that needs to be done, my mind elsewhere trying to think of ways to get out of the assignment.

See my problem is that while I can turn off all other distractions, I need music. A set of headphones and whatnot, it makes me work faster and more efficiently. I actually have convinced teachers to let me listen to music during tests because it up's my proficiency hundredfold. Most of my exams nowadays are nationals so it doesn't work anymore, but for some reason it really makes a difference for me... Like the way L sits in dethnote, I guess it's kinda the same. I pretty much can't work without it.

For basic homework wait until the night before, of course. For papers, take home exams, projects, etc, I again wait until the night before and sit down in the kitchen with my ipod and a drink. Kitchen is important because its away from the tv and computer and because its wooden chairs, not something soft and comfy that might make me fall asleep. Music is good, but if you're like me and just have to sing along to everything, you'll never get any work done so make sure it's instrumental or something. A drink is good because it clears my mind a bit and I have an easier time focusing. Just don't get drunk, the last thing you want is to pass out or have a hangover the next day. (I actually don't want recommend alcohol for homework, this is more of a "do as I say, not as I do" thing.)

Have you tried relaxing music? I can understand needing music, but some music can be more distracting than others (As an example, some songs are more "catchy" than others. In that way, the songs are distracting because you're paying more attention to the music than your work). Piano solos and light orchestral pieces are nice for studying, at least for me. You don't want something too light that you end up falling asleep though.

I listen to alot of classical and metallica when studying and testing. It works really well for me. The only other stuff I listen to other than that in those situations is mellow and laid back music, alot of chili peppers.

I cant listen to music, it just distract me. I can read a novel with music on, but studying and writting stuff never works for me.


I usually just wait as much as I can...but thats what everyone is doing. The only other way I find to motivate myself to study is when I help someone else, or study with other people around at school.

Find someone to do homework with, or better find a study group for your class. The best way to do homework is in groups, unless of course you're doing some paper with individual research. For me, i had a couple of bodies that we used to take classes together and do homeworks together and we tend to invite others to join us. Worked great for me.

I usually don't do any of my homework unless I actually need it to pass the class, like essays, projects, and term papers and stuff like that. I just can't find any point or motivation to do my homework. =/
