The difference between a rat and a dog is that one is a domesticated animal and by its very nature trusts humans to provide care and affection. I think pretty much anyone who's been close to both, no matter how much they loved the rat, will admit that dogs are on a whole other level of self-awareness. That said, I'd be pretty horrified if he did it with a domesticated rat as well. (rats can be pretty cute once you get to know them (and assuming you keep them out of natural sunlight where you can see their pupils. That's just creepy.))

well, I'm not saying what he did was in anyway right, but I'm not going to compare the life of a dog to his...I don't get why people would like to see him blown up, if he had thrown a baby over the cliff then I could see that being a possible reaction...

Maybe it's just me and my crazy dog=/=human nature. There's a lot worse things that people have done to animals, I'd say religiously beating an animal over the course of its life would end up being worse than having it (hopefully) instantaneously die on impact.

Please don't read this post as if I'm condoning what he did.
