In before New Jersey jokes (does that "black guy stealing it" one count? Seems like that could happen outside New Jersey too)

Wonder if a news station would be interested/slow enough to do an investigative report on this type of thing.

As such, I hate this process as well and generally buy from Target or GameCrazy now.

Re: Fucking Gamestop Selling Fucking Open Fucking Games

I know when I worked at Software Etc, if a "checked out" game came back in less than new condition, we had to buy it. 'course, we also were picky about the condition used games were in, whereas now they just resurface them. Plus you could return games...which is something done away with due to the general complaint of reshrinking stuff.

It's hard to expect that employees will have hands-on experience with new games when you pay 'em barely over minimum wage and all. From that standpoint, I understand the checkout system. Logically, restricting things to new games or gut copies might make more sense, but most things in those kinds of stores are dictated by corporate policy, which is the antithesis of common sense.

Personally, it's the stickers n' crap that get me. I will very rarely ever buy a gut copy of a game. Not because the game has been unwrapped and the game stored in a cardboard sleeve in a drawer. But rather, because they slap stickers all over the case, which rarely ever come off clean without some effort. That's not what I'm paying new price for.

So I agree in a sense, new games should be in new condition. However, I don't personally care if the game has been opened already. Just that it's still mint.

I will give you an analogy. Say you want a milkshake. I pour you a milkshake, but first i drink half of it out of the glass, then i refill the milkshake and sell it to you for full price. I still drank your fucking milkshake.

And don't tell me alot of stores do this. Best Buy doesn't do it with their games, even fucking local game stores don't do it. Its a shitty practice any way you look at it.
    that is a horrible analogy
Okay, think of it this way. You ask for a milkshake, so I serve you a milkshake using a cup I already drank out of and charge you full price. Or better yet, you ask for a milkshake, so I take a milkshake an employee bought and never drank out of and give it to you. Are you a satisfied customer? How about this one: say you ask for a Whopper with Cheese, so I take a whopper that was already made and put cheese on it. Are you satisfied? Then, picture that they did all this and still charged you full price.

If you can't see the underlying theme in all of this, you're an idiot consumer... and that's typical. The problem isn't so much the methodology behind it - the problem is I didn't ask for a pre-made sandwich with cheese. I asked for a fucking sandwich and I expect it to be made fresh. I didn't ask for a milkshake that someone else bought and never drank. I asked for a fucking milkshake. Most importantly, I don't want to pay full price for an item that isn't brand fucking new.

So yes, I agree with the OP. If employees can use these games or mishandle them, I shouldn't pay full fucking price for an opened game and I don't give a shit if it's just as new as when it arrived.

Also, in opposition to the OP, asked for a sealed game. They can't tell you no if they have one back there - and if they don't and you hate it that much just buy the game somewhere else.

Oh, and the answer here is to pre-order. It always comes sealed.

I hate that practice. Ever since i got a bad copy of a "new" The Darkness i've avoided gamestop at all cost. Between that and them trying to shove used copies on you all the time, i dont even know how they stay in business.

You know, if you buy a new factory-sealed version, those stickers come off perfectly when you remove the shrink wrap. :rocl:

That's one of the main reasons I prefer to buy new games: I don't have to worry about the stickers on the case.

I think you're missing the actual problem with it. For an analogy to work, it needs to reflect the same problem as getting sold a used game when you expected a new one.

There's no such thing as CD-cooties, so drinking from the same cup is an inappropriate analogy. Being sold a milkshake that an employee just bought but nobody drank from and was resold to you is absolutely fine by me. Throwing cheese on a burger that was just made for someone else is fine by me, too. None of those reflect the problem with a used game.

A more appropriate analogy would be something like buying a new car, driving it off the lot, and coming back with it a week later and selling/trading it back to the dealer... then the dealer turning around and selling it as brand-new again.

The underlying problem is that with a new game, you can expect a good product based on the reputation and reliability of the manufacturer and the fact that it has been unopened and untouched since it was packaged. With a used game, even if only temporarily and repackaged, you no longer have that expectation and there's no accountability for what happened to it during that time. Now, if you elect to purchase a used game for a used game price, that's your choice. But he paid for that extra assurance of a quality product when such an assurance didn't actually exist because it was resealed.

That is the problem, and that is what is missing from most of your analogies which either miss the point (giving you a milkshake someone else just bought) or overexaggerating the problems (drinking from the cup and giving it to you).

No, Khamsin. In my examples all I attempted to do was illustrate the point. When I ask for a service, I don't ask somebody to half ass that service and give me something either someone else has used, unsealed, or compromised. I want a new product so I can be assured of its quality. I just happen to believe that unsealing some games is just stupid, especially knowing that employees are free to use them and play them as much as they want.

That's why I said "gut copy", because for some odd reason the stores around me don't see fit to open the gut copy, remove the game, reshrink it, then put stickers on the shrinkwrap (we used to do that for N64 games, not others). They just put 'em straight on the case (after, of course, taking the disc out). Same with used games.

Seriously, if I'm in Gamestop and want to buy a game they have, I'll go ask if all they have is the gut copy. If that's the case, I don't buy it there, I'll go order from Amazon instead.

Chances are of getting a fucked up new disk, is about the same as getting a fucked up used disc.

Its a damn shame that every time there is some kind of corporate buy out or merger the shittier company is the one that ends up "taking over".

EB used to be an amazingly good store and Gamestop has just turned it to utter shit. They give you pennies for trade-ins, don't allow returns anymore, have that dumbass policy the OP is bitching about, and they barely carry any new stock beyond pre-orders. Half the time when you do pre-order they don't even get on release day, or they sell it to one of their friends if you don't show up within a few hours to get it, so you have to wait for the next shipment to get it.

For new games its Best Buy or Walmart only for me, and I buy the occasional used game from Gamestop, and even that is getting more and more rare these days.

Chances are of getting a fucked up new disk, is about the same as getting a fucked up used disc.
Chances are higher that said disc will be fucked up if an employee or someone else such as a kid or stupid employee/consumer put their hands all over it. So no, they aren't the same.

If I see them whipping out the disc sleeve for a game, I just ask to inspect before they put in the case. I haven't happened upon a scratched one yet, but just taking a couple seconds to cover your own ass never hurts.

That would imply that if everybody was 100% accountable and trustworthy, and could not harm a disc, there would be less fucked up used discs than new discs.

And that the number of fucked up used discs are brought up to the number of fucked up new discs simply by the chance of someone fucking it up.

So no, the chances of getting a fucked up used disc are higher than getting a fucked up new disc.

Exactly, it is an assurance of quality. Whether somebody pours the milkshake or makes the burger specifically for you or somebody else, it has no affect on the quality. Who it was meant for is purely a matter of intention, and exists only as a thought in the cook's mind until somebody says "Hey, give the shake you just poured 2 seconds ago to that guy instead." They make the food the same for you as anyone else. And drinking from your cup before refilling and giving it to you is just pure malice and negligence. It's closer to the GameStop guy just giving you the finger and purposely smudging and scratching the disc before giving it to you.
