New harddrive problems

My other harddrive crashed, so I bought a new Maxtor 300gb harddrive. I put it in and put the old harddrive in under to see if I could salvage anything from it. When I turned the PC I put the OS disk in and it loaded windows XP onto.... I thought my new harddrive... But apparently not. I guess I have to put my driver disk in first and select a few options and then put it in, and I did that, except it kept spitting the CD out at me and said "Try again!". So I restarted my PC with just the OS disk in it and now the old harddrive works? But the new harddrive doesn't even show up... I don't think. I have an F drive now that has 129gb (kind of a guess, doing a disk scan on it atm) available space (but there's nothing on it). So... what <_>

your mother board probably doesnt have 48bit LBA support...

meaning anything over a certain size (160GB i think... or something around there) will show up as drastically smaller...

You have to set the jumpers on your hard drives to slave and master if you are using PATA (big flat ribbon cables).

Did you change in your BIOS to have your new hard drive boot second (with your CD drive being first)?
