If you stick with dark arts on smn with a few dark skill gear u can probably aspir mobs to keep mp up. The only downside would be the 2min charge restriction when trying to switch arts to use the -na spells if u need to spam them since u need to trigger addendum:white.

Aspir and sublimation would probably be the biggest shiner for smn since they can probably keep an avatar out indefinately if you dont spam BP in solo situations.

SMN/SCH is pretty fun for fooling around solo, but it's pretty hard to pull off in practice, without Stoneskin or Blink, because eventually you need to release the avatar (or it dies), and you've got 0 defense while recasting a new one unless you spend time to Earthen Ward (Which remember, isn't the best Stoneskin to begin with) and Aerial Armor. But for screwing around, it was a blast, 3mp/tic avatars with decent gear, and Sublimation + Elemental Siphon together is fun. That said, I can't think of many situations where i'd ever seriously sub /SCH when i'm on SMN (maybe XP @ birds )

I've read this thread as it happens, so I apologize if this was covered and I'm just forgetting. Are helices tiered like nukes? I'm only 52 but I'm wondering if I'll need all the obis or if I can just get the usual four.

No, they all do the same damage (and cost the same amount of MP).

You don't even need all the obis, waste of inventory seriously.

SCH is an incredible main healer for Einherjar.

The whole graviga usefulness thing shines in Tier1, but not quite so much in Tier2 unless you get some Logis since just about everything is sleepable past Tier1. Despite this, healing really becomes a strong point for SCH.

The setup we usually use involves 2 merit party setups - 4 melees brd and rdm usually. I (the SCH) usually get put in the 3rd party which is a BLM party usually for balance. I can actually heal really well with accession. In addition, bring Korin Obi (Light Obi) and give yourself light weather and you pretty much get a 30% HP healed swing for about 20 MP every 3 minutes. The ability to AoE cure every party in the alliance is what really makes this good though.

The MP efficiency is pretty crazy to the point where I can pretty much heal the entire alliance by myself without running out of MP with a Ghorn BRD. I invested in a -50 enmity setup for cures for this and it's worked out pretty well. I still use the graviga thing on all pulls and it's still helpful for keeping distance, but it's definitely not quite as useful when dealing with sleepable mobs as opposed to like Dark Elementals.

Re: Scholar Discussion #3 (post March patch)

Random question here, but I'm just wondering if I've missed something when it comes to SCH using Vermy Cloak.

I don't have any other jobs (currently) at a level that could use it, so is there actually any point in getting one apart from when i'm 'standing' (which in no way justifies 700k or w/e they're going for)

I mean, by using it we lose the 3rd tick on Sublimation, which, to me, basically has the same effect as a tic of refresh, especially when i sub /whm and keep stoneskin up. (I'm only 64 atm, no /rdm SS yet.)

So yeah, is there any scenario where Vermy cloak will be more useful that my AF hat and Body combined? I havent compared the stats but I'm sure the AF beats it through MP+ and enmity- doesnt it?

Oh and also, as a question for when I can use it, will something like a Walahra Turban ever be more useful than that extra sublimation etc? 5% haste is nice, but does it beat out that tic? Oh and of course, I do love the +30 MP it gives too.

    Thanks in advance

EDIT: Oh yeah, I only ask because i've seen SCH going around in campaign in them post-sublimation, am I missing something?

I wear Vermy cloak most of the time for my standing/curing set. AF hat w/sublimation = 3mp/tick you get later, Vermy w/sublimation = 1mp/tick you get now, 2mp/tick you get later. Both ways it's still 3MP/tick, so its really just a matter of preference if you want that extra 1mp/tick now or later.

I don't have a vermy, but I can add this. My Light Arts set I don't wear AF hat, instead I prefer something that gives MND or MP bonuses. Also, I don't rely on Sublimation unless I'm in a situation where it would prove more viable than constant refresh(LONG fights, no RDM in PT, etc). That's b/c it generally is a pain in the ass to keep having to ask for no refresh, or later when I'm shy on MP for SS asking for it back. Then there is the fact that if I'm on SCH, my normal job is SS/enspell'ing the melee(and frequently get hit w/ AoE as I do), so I rarely keep full HP for a good sublimation build up.

    Main - Apollo's Staff
    Sub - Bugard Strap +1
    Ammo - Phantom Tathlum
    Head - Yigit Turban (-5)
    Body - Mahatma Hpl. (-4)
    Hands - Mahatma Cuffs (-3)
    Legs - Mahatma Slops (-4)
    Feet - Arborist Nails (-5)
    Back - Errant Cape (-5)
    Waist - Penitent's Rope (-3)
    Neck - Beak Necklace +1
    Ear1 - Novia Earring (-7)
    Ear2 - Magnetic Earring
    Ring1 - Tamas Ring (-3)
    Ring2 - Trooper's Ring (-4)

That's -43 there. I think I miscalculated by including Concealing Cuffs (-5) and Goliard Trews (-5) which I'm still looking for. That would give you -46. Then add -4 from possible merits and that will give you -50.

SCH doesn't get too much in terms of gear so I figured filling slots with - enmity gear is most useful for now.

You could also add the -2 enmity strap to that setup, (staff strap I believe.)

Highest a SCH can get is around -62 I think. Can throw in Hedgehog bomb, Goliard Body, Staff Strap, Delta Earring, etc.

I find the - enmity set really useful since you don't get Cure V for the reduced enmity on cast. Also, I find myself using a lot of Cure IV AoE in Einherjar due to the nonstop spamming of TP moves.

I've found this to be an extremely nice piece for SCH. Curing wise, 5% Conserve MP and -5 Emnity, it's well worth the effort to get.

I was also thinking about possibly getting a Fenrir Torque for SCH, worth the effort in comparison to other neckpieces? Even if it's a nighttime piece. I found myself pullin' aggro quite a bit the other night in SSR, just doing buffs on everyone.

Sorry for asking this, if someone has already answered it ; ;, but do helix spells benefit more from INT or from Elemental Skill. Would they be sort of like normal nukes, where it depends on the mob if you switch to skill or int?

Re: Scholar Discussion #3 (post March patch)

Finished soloing Evil Oscar KSNM30 on SCH/RDM. Took 8 minutes 35 seconds on Firesday.

This turned out to be a lot easier solo than I thought. I know a THF and RDM have solo'd this before so it wasn't like an amazing feat to begin with. Basically gravity and bind land for about 4 to 8 times before you start getting that building resist - I tried to kill it before getting to this point. It only has between 10-15k HP so wasn't too bad.

It does that extremely bad breath instant kill thing but it takes forever to charge up so the only way you'll ever really get hit by it is if you are crossing paths to change directions or it hits you and the "added effect: weight" procs on you (you're screwed if that happens). Lots of helix + kite and nukes were quite easy to get off due to good casting speed.

I blew Tabula Rasa at the beginning and got it to about 60% within the first minute. I really underestimated this 2hr when I started doing SCH solos, but it's really great. The key is just setting up your macros so you can "rapid fire" Parsimony + Alacrity + Ebullience without inhibiting your movement speed. I got 6 nukes off within that 60 second tabula rasa for about 750-800 a nuke. Also, since you're kiting, the 50% casting time alacrity provides is really useful for safety purposes. The 50% recast down time also lets you just alternate Blizz and Thunder 4.

I'm fairly certain a BLM/RDM can solo that as well, but probably just a tad tougher due to weaker enfeebling skills, longer casting times, and not as good MP efficiency. Probably ok with meds.

Overall, it's tougher than the Bugbear ENM in my opinion. It a bit less HP than Bugboy, but the instant death WS is always worrisome, and it really starts to spam it as its HP gets below 50%. The worst part of the solo is the added effect: gravity procs on its normal attack. If this hits you, it's instant death pretty much.

    from otherwiki
Many Player don't realize SCH gets a bonus for certain subs. So far confirmed are bonuses for BLM sub and WHM sub. With WHM sub, SCH has higher def and magic def, allowing them to better survive stealing hate. With BLM sub, SCH gets an additional bonus to black magic when in DarK Arts. this bonus appears to significantly increase both MACC and MATT. It should be noted that this is in addition to the MAB that /BLM gives to any job. This information was released at the Osaka Altana Festival and appears on the official Japanese FFXI website.
Is there any truth to this? I tried testing the WHM part and my Defense went up precisely 0, which makes me think this is a pile of crap.

The -enmity stats is retardly good beyond -50. Your hate from whatever is reduce to half at -50, one-third at -66, one-fourth at -75 ... and 1/100 at -99.

And you know if you're going to propose a theory of maximum curing before capping CE, the number of how much hp you can cure before reaching that will go beyond your imagination.

Suppose a WHM with -0 enmity can cure (1-4) to anyone for 5,000 HP before getting his CE capped.
with -50 enmity, you can cure 10k
    with -66 enmity, ~15k
    with -75 enmity, 20k
    with -90 enmity, 50k
    and with -99 enmity = 495k !

    This is sick.
