For me, the fact that they could have earned more money by working during the strike than what they got in reparations stood out more as a moral than the thing they tacked on at the very end.

And for reference, I would normally argue that a strike is worth it if it changes things for the better even if the short term cost outweighs immediate benefits, however in this episode, taken at face value... the Canadians were better off not striking in the first place. Whether that's true of the Writer's Guild, I don't know.

This is the best answer. I honestly should've seen it coming, but I didn't.

This is easily one of my most favorite episodes lol, butters' song was so funny I had tears in my eyes.

I'm not your fwend, buddeh! i'm not your buddeh, guy! i'm not your guy, fwend!

    fixed for poetic justice.

My favorite part was the kinda subtle thing they did by using all the internet fads... kinda like all the late-night shows did when they didn't have writers.

I liked those back and forth exchanges especially how they said "fwriend".

I lost it when he did the backflip. My GF was just ing her eyes at me as if she is better than me just because I instantly knew all the Youtube references.

It's not about current revenue, it is about not getting screwed over in the future.

    Re: South Park (Season 12)

I think the ep was more a reflection on the uncompromising 'oh fuck we can't back down now' attitude than the actual gain to be had from negotiating internet royalties, which is nevertheless a dumb gamble at this stage of things when the current trend is still to give it away. Hundreds of people lost jobs forever because of the strike, and now those writers will never ever see money from DVD or internet royalties because the shows they were writing for are fucking dead. All because the WGA didn't budge a goddamn inch on their demands of the 'imaginary' money. Unions are led by goddamn morons terrified of looking bad in the wake of poor decision-making was the moral I walked away with.

See the thing is, VHS was purely a developed distribution mechanism. People can't even decide what kind of next gen-dvd is the next VHS, let alone what file type or sharing method to use over the internet. I think their point was that striking is, for lack of a better phrase, serious business. Everyone has to pick their fights and when to fight them, and when essentially nobody is in a position to make any real profit off it is not that time.

I'm sure I don't understand the writer's guild strike exactly, but what I basically got was that it was just like what happened in the show... "We're striking until we get more money." -- "Um, nobody's making money off what you want to make money from... there's no more money to give you." -- "Fuck that, we want more money!" -- "oooook..." Ending in some trivial concessions that weren't worth the strike and nothing really changing as far as the internet situation.

There has to be a better way to make sure that you don't get screwed in the future than by fucking yourself in the present heh.

Hmm... You mean the moral of the story is that instead of throwing away the lives of countless thousands of more people, you should accept your losses and pull out before you get too deep in the quagmire? Interesting.

But the point is had the writers did not have a strike, in 5-10-15-20 years when the internet does become a valid revenue source, writers would have complained about getting screwed over and people would have laughed at them for not making sure that they were going to get their fair share years before. It is a basic "damned-if-you-do-damned-if-you-don't" situation.

Yeah there were definitely some Iraq moments that were hard to tell if it was coincidental or not heh.

So true lol. Not that I am bad mouthing Family Guy because I love that show too, but they were pretty dead on making a joke about the repetitiveness surrounding jokes like "Oh you think thats bad remember the time..." coming from the show.
