    Pokemon Trainer discussion

Discuss our Top Tier character and his posse here. I'll start, of course.

Squirtle: Surprised me (in a good way). You'd think a turtle would be slow, but this is quite possibly the hardest character in the game to hit, and he's got some good moves to back him up. UpSmash is my favorite of his kill moves, but I tend to have to lead/sneak into it, so it's not the best for a 1v1 imo unless they are dropping into it. His DAir is also quite effective as a KO move, nice little combo that ends with a good bit of knockback on the final hit, and his FAir kick has netted me KOs too. I can actually (sort of) Wall of Pain with him, but his UpB makes it risky as it's hard to control. Waterfall doesn't have much knockback either, but it does actually land a decent amount of % and has great priority if surrounded. His Neutral A also combos quite well with good priority. OverB isn't damaging by much at all, but it's a good move for avoiding things...I've slid under quite a few hammers already. Neutral B is an effective edgeguarder if you can charge it in time.

Ivysaur: Sloooooooow character, but so deadly. He has several KO moves with a good hitbox and coming in after Squrtle's combo attacks links to an easy KO in capable hands. The problem with Ivysaur is his timing, as his reaction speed on his KO moves can be pretty bad vs faster characters, but his range helps make up for that. FAir, Upsmash, F Smash, and to a lesser extent Dair are what I usually use. He has a lot of combo moves too, but as a tethergrabber he has the weakest recovery of the 3 (overall, though tethering does have a few perks) and is a lighter character also. Someone with a decent range (Marth, Olimar, ZSamus) can pose a problem for him, as they will usually be more speedy than him, but he has a few ways to add extra points up if they get too close.

Charizard: Hmmm. I want to like Charizard. He has a good balance of weight and speed, 3 jumps, can glide, and Flamethrower damage adds up fast (plus it's more controllable than Bowser's). But I'm still trying to figure out his K.O. move of choice. My most used has been his UpB, but that's a bad idea (for a few reasons I shouldn't have to explain). I am still learning about him more than the other two, so I'll keep my reservations for later with more practice behind me. Olimar and Lucas have stolen more attention than they should, but I like them a lot too...what can I say. :/

I want more tips! Has stamina gotten in your way much (hasn't for me). Different character opinions? Strategies? Thoughts? Discuss, I know people here use him (them)!

Ivysaur seems to emphasize range more than anything else, at least in my opinion. He's good for keepaway, and in all seriousness, Bullet Seed is one hell of a good move.

Although, I was playing as Kirby against level 9 Ivysaur last night, managed to suck him up, copy his power, and Bullet Seeded him immediately after for like 40%+ damage. Godly.

I haven't played with him much, but I like Charizard the most. His up smash(with the wings) is really sweet.

I'm trying to get better with Charizard. I find that getting a flamethrower in builds dmg surprizingly fast, then I rock smash when applicable. Rock smash is surprizingly strong not to mention even the little rocks that break off can do good dmg which makes for an attack I use alot. His air attacks seem to lack though, which sucks as a flier, they dont seem to KO well although Foward Air does good damage.

And yes I love being cheap as hell with Squirtle/Ivy. Both of their Up A attacks have good hit boxes and priority.

I originally planned on maining Pit and Sonic but after playing for a while, i'm really drawn to Lucas and PT. Mostly on PT I use Ivysaur. Just something about him works for me and his recovery vine whip has rediculous range. Not all that good with the other 2 yet but I feel like I play a mean Ivysaur lol.

Quoted for truth! I can knock the shit out of bosses with that, but it's amazingly hard to get even a lot of those connects on a normal sized character.

I love Charizard's Flamethrower though. So good. And Squirtle is such a beast. <3

If you get the timing right, Rock Smash can one hit a Smash Ball. Don't think I've ever fully hit someone with it, though.

I noticed last night while fighting the sandbag that after using certian moves, the squirt gun like move for instance, Squirtle will change his idle posture from exited to tired, and then to very tired, does this have any effect on his performance?

Yes, pokemon have stamina gauges that you need to swap them up to keep topped off. That's why I'm not too big a fan of PT, forcing myself to change just seems meh to me. Least with Shelda it's up to me.

I actually cycle quite a bit anyway, I use diffrent Pokemon based on what % I'm at and how many people are left. What really sucks is I use Squirtle almost exclusivly 1 v 1 and even if I started using multiple characters people camp your pokeball in 1v1, so you take a free smash to the face everytime

Exactly, it's a freebie KO if you swap your pokemon against ike or dedede.

Well I've managed to be pretty effective with PT so far so I'm not going to get all up in arms about this, I've used Squirtle/Ivysaur from 0-200% w/o swapping before and been able to KO people the entire time, so it can't be devistating. it's just mabye uneeded, especially in 1v1 where swapping is pretty much out of the question.

    Re: Pokemon Trainer discussion

I hate when it auto cycles to charizard. He sucks online, the only time I use him is during invincibility after respawn to get a smash in so I can safely DownB to Squirtle without fear of charged up smash. Then I'll usually cycle to Ivysaur later on at about 40-50% (usually takes a few seconds, literally, with squirtle...his BAir is beautiful) for the KO shots...
B=>Up Smash; UpGrab => Forward Up Smash; lure to edge, up B recovery=>DownAir meteor smash, etc. Lots of options with his great sets of moves. I also like his neutral air.

Auto-cycle upon KO is the bane of any PT main.

It's not so bad and you can kind of work around it. At higher % just get into the habit of switching into ivy/zard when it's safe. Kinda sucks to do at 1v1 but it's a great way to start with Squirtle.
