Error Updating after this last update..

Tried several accounts.. no windower (Don't use it on this box), and I've even completely reinstalled the game (uninstalled pol/game/expansions, wiped registry).. I tried copying the data from another computer on the network.. still not happy (and other registry)

Downloading the latest version's information.... (0%)

then it comes up "Network is busy or there are connection problems. Please try again later or verify that cables, networking devices, and network settings are properly configured." it's error code: POL-1161..

The machine is fine, traces/pings out ip connectivity is not an issue.. I wouldn't be getting as far if it was.. I tried updating this machine right away, like I did my other one (before the update servers got busy) and it errored out all night.. and it's been happening up until now.. hence the reinstall.. when that didn't work I gave up and came here to see if anyone was having this problem or knew what to do.

A friend had the exact same problem today, he lives in Canada, maybe its an ISP issue, the thing is that i suggested him to download the update from here:

the 23rd post, by Koga, idk if its safe or anything, i havent used myself, but my friend did and he dwnldd, unzipped, checked the files and started to play under 1 hr, hope it helps

I shouldn't have to say this, but server congestion, ever heard of it? You'll just have to retry until you get through. I have 2 machines on the same router and oddly I did have one go through and the other absolutely refuse to, but at this point just retry. If you can't update by like 2-3 days from now, maybe maybe they did something lame like only allow 1 update per IP address to help reduce update lag, but I very much doubt that is the case. With that said, if you're really panicing over this, try getting a new IP on your router address and seeing if it'll help. /shrug

I have same/similar problem.

at march 10th, on my PC at home i could log/download update and start playing w/o much troubles (after some hrs updating).
Yesterday afternoon/night I couldnt log in to FFXI. I log in to POL correctly, and go trough POLmail/Friedlist... but then it crashes on initial FFXI screen (where "play" button should pop).
This throws me error 1341.

I tried 2 diff accounts, tried uninstalling antivirus, closing spy&bot but no positive results. Also, had some1 to log my account from his PC and he had no problems, so its deffinetaly not an account issue.

Edit: could finally update Pol on my PC @ work, but now i have exactly same problem as in home.

Also, on my PC at work..

Yesterday morning tried to update on my PC at work (different PC, diff connection/ different place) and I cant even update POL. It starts "downlading latest version's info" for like 10min, then i could update some files but it seems to crash (POL-1160) always when downloading "StringTable.bin".
Today morning i still have same problem. cant update.


I know its a bit confusing, but any help or tips about what I can try would be much appreciated.

I had a problem similar to the OP's. The POL update went fine after a couple of retries, but the FFXI update wouldn't work. It kept giving me POL-1160 or 1161 errors, never getting past the "Downloading new update information" screen. My problem ended up being my router (a Netgear), which somehow lost all of the port forwarding information I put in. I hooked my cable modem directly into the PC, and was able to get the update going, though it did timeout once.

After the update finished, I hooked up everything normally and had no problems with the game.

How could i know if I have a router issue also? would it work if I connect with dial-up? (@work now, so cant test with it)

Well, unfortunately, if you're connecting via dial-up, then you don't have a router. The only thing that clue'd me into it being a router problem was that I couldn't update from my 360 either. It gave me the same error.

To be honest, if you're using dial-up, then I'm not sure what your problem could be.

No u missunderstood. Im not using dial-up. I have DSL and using a 4-port router (or modem idk).
Just was asking if I could log in trying to use dial-up instead of DSL

Yeah, if you logged in via dial-up and were actually able to start the update, then that'd be a sign your router might be at fault.

I haven't worked with DSL stuff in a long time, but you *may* be able to just plug your DSL modem into your computer and connect that way. You might have to make some changes on your PC, though.

Something similar is happening to me. It's been 2 days now, and it's getting retarded, I have even reinstalled 2 different FFXIs 4 times each (french and english version) and the problem is still there; after retrieving messages, PoL screen doesn't load at all, and I can't do shit but wait for the stupid error message to come up. I even successfully downloaded the update (canceled at 89% and restarted the day after, after some serious lag), but the screen just doesn't want to load -.-; any ideas?

Not to completely derail this thread, but damn. Was there reason to be such a cock to the OP. He had a well written well through out post asking for suggestions. judging from what he said it probably wasn't server congestion considering it has been a few days since the update. But no you have to fire off with attitide. It's not like he typed "WTF i can't download it andz i can't go camps in teh doons." Congrats you got your download to work. The poor fucker is having a problem and even reinstalled the damn game you think he really is that stupid to sit through all of that, AND all of the updates just because it was server congestion. Manners, decorum, civility ever heard of that?

Exactly the same happening with me and my BF, GMs keep telling us to talk to our ISP wich we did, but no problem reported on that side. Tried everything possible, still nothing, and we could also like Gan log in after the update, but next day WOOSH until now. Router ports are open, firewall/lolnorton off, rebooted everything reboutable, even downloaded again Vista patch for POL (Vista users).
On a little side note, while trying to contact GMs on the SE web chat, the page takes like an aeon to load correctly, I'm hoping it's their congestion due to many complaints.

Today everything went back to normal, could log in again, been playing fine.
Last GM chat I had he said something about our ISP sharing server with Hotmail, wich had a red alert problem and was partially down. I couldn't really take the sense out of what he was telling me, but anyhow, Hotmail is back up, and so is POL.

Same happened to me. Apparently they (POL) had received several calls from people complaining about this same problem, and we all happened to have the same ISP (Telefonica). From what I understand, Hotmail has some serious problems, and it somehow linked to POL for those of us who use that silly ISP. It's funny because the majority of people in my country use this ISP, and they were overwhelmed with phone calls these days...and it got fixed all of a sudden. Oh well, now it works, so I won't try to fix it on my own again.

I'm having multiple weird issues as of recently, everytime I zone, I will get stuck at loading data screen and I will need to shutdown the game. Then I won't be able to log back in until I try on a different computer, then if I zone on that computer I'll hafta shutdown again and move back to the last PC to log back in, and so on and so forth everytime I need to zone. Also been trying to reactivate a mule character and it won't accept my credit card due to server congestion and/or mistyped information which I know isn't the case. Anyone having any of these similar issues?

I get stuck at zones, ONLY since the Monday update. It doesn't stick at the same zone everytime, just whenever it feels like it. Got stuck at the crystal at Mea, the zone to Shakrami, Al'Zhabi mog zone, Tavnazia, all kinds of places. It just gets stuck at the downloading data screen, and it times out. The first time I freaked out and had my friend zone me, and I could log in fine. The next time I got really mad because he wasn't on, waited 10 minutes, then let me zone in fine. Now that I think of it, the last time I got stuck was Wednesday night, and I had never had this happen before the Monday update.

Yar this has been the 1st time either of my problems have arose, I had my brothers PC right next to mine so it was easy to log back on, on another PC, but was still very frustrating since I had people helping me out when it was happening >.> Hopefully this will all blow over as soon as they patch all their mistakes.

I play on a PS2 and whenever I try it stalls at 0% and tells me i have the POL-1161 problem. I've tried maybe 10 times last night and this morning. its July 23rd and I see all the others posts are from March. What's wrong with my system?
