lol yes i do, and misterbob kindly pasted the definition, so using it as defined there is so broad that it can apply to basically all media. Hence 'loses its meaning' when colloquially it is a pejorative.Originally Posted by guartz
Just because it applies to most media in U.S doesn't mean the word loses it meaning, it means that most media in U.S is propaganda.
Am I the only person that noticed the tags?D:

you have a point, but so do i. i prefer to use words as they are understood by people, not necessarily by their definition. This leads to discussion of the relevant points rather than pointless arguments over semantics. You use the word as if you have the textbook definition lying in wait, ready to call people out with repeated cries of "You have no idea what propaganda means, do you?" No need to be such a troll.Originally Posted by guartz

also want to point out that this doesn't even address what i said. When I said all media, i mean spoken (speeches, radio), written (press releases, books), video (tv, movies), internet (all the above and then some). And it applies to most media everywhere, not just the U.S. All the above usually seeks to spread information or further an idea, which to me is too broad a definition to have much meaning.Originally Posted by guartz
You guys are really trying too hard with the conspiracy theory bullshit. Do you ever watch anything OTHER than CNN/MSM/FOX? lol I swear to god everytime I hear that phrase, I feel like I'm in the Twilight Zone. Could you atleast try to use a more creative cop-out phrase instead sometime? Thanks.
As for the video, yeah.. if you don't atleast agree that this video is PROPAGANDA, then you're further justifying the "blind faith" labeling of Obama's voters. I don't see how you can argue about the definition itself. You sound like another politician trying to change the English language to get out of a rut.
Your opinions don't even match those who are actual Obama voters. Everywhere I've seen this video posted, Obama supporters have agreed that this video is a disgrace and can only hurt his campaign. But no, lets not criticize our modern-day MLK who will change America as we know it. Blasphemous! Shut your mouth!
Do you really think these BEP video's are not being co-produced? How naive.Originally Posted by Correction

But seriously, here's what I found on the "yes we can" one:
But if you can find me anything about the Obama campaign directly telling will.i.am what to do and say, be my guest.Code:After watching Barack Obama's New Hampshire primary concession speech on Jan. 8, Will.i.am, lead singer of the Black Eyed Peas, and producer Jesse Dylan, eldest son of Bob Dylan, decided to produce a pro-Obama music video titled "Yes We Can." The video features John Legend, Scarlett Johansson, Herbie Hancock, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, and many other celebrities. Will.i.am writes in his blog (below) that recording the four-minute video (posted at www.yeswecansong.com) took about 48 hours. On Feb. 2, somebody posted the video on youtube.com, where it has already garnered millions of hits. Will.i.am and Dylan assured ABC News that they did not give the Obama campaign any advance notice of their project. After it surfaced, the video was posted on the Obama08 campaign Web site and e-mailed to Moveon.org contributors (Page 2). The candidate's wife, Michelle, forwarded "Yes We Can" to Obama supporters (Page 3) just in time for the February 5th primaries and caucuses in 22 states.
oh, and from Yahoo:
the Obama campaign had no role in this video
Now see, the problem with the word "propaganda" is it generally carries a really negative connotation. If you want to use it for this, you have to use it for basically every kind of political advertising by every politician, first party or third. This is why I pointed out the campaign ads of guartz's boy RAWNPAWL- same shit different politician. Along the lines of what evilbau has said, we either go by the broadest definition in which the word carries little meaning (but of course still can be used in negative insinuations) or we reserve it's use acutely and accurately in terms of popular understanding/connotation.
Well, it has a political meaning despite being an "indie" production. Now I don't have a problem with U.S. citizens speaking in whatever indie production with presidential elections theme.Originally Posted by Maxxthepenguin

As far as the word propaganda, my issue is the massively negative connotation. The literal definition is not so bad but is very broad, however using it implies very bad things, so use it carefully.
You also could have linked a video of the ad without the title it had and without the tags such as brainwashing. But you didn't. You made a choice to link this specific video.
Our country is not in a vacuum, people from other countries (particularly Mexico) are affected greatly by our decisions. I don't see why their opinions shouldn't be listened to and why they shouldn't be able to show who they support. In the end they can't vote, and that is right too. But being mad at them for existing and saying what they think is fucking strange.Originally Posted by Tajin

God, do you fucking know why everyone throws "conspiracy theorist" at you every damn time you post?
It's because you make up shit without having any support for it whatsoever (they must be lying! the government/<corporation>/<organization> is repressing the truth from coming out! you guys think you know, but you don't. seriously do you guys just watch and read credible news sources? in the real world you'd know what I know). At the very least you could humor us with some bullshit link where some nutjob claims will.i.am is related to Obama or secretly moonlights on the campaign staff.
fuck.
