    Re: Exercising/Toning Advice for Women

Like Aeromyth posted above, the high reps/low weight thing is a myth.

Toning is just your muscle compared to your bodyfat above it. Building muscle and losing fat makes you more toned.

You can't get big and bulky without eating more calories than you burn anyway. Even if you weren't lifting, those same excess calories would have just went to fat.

Remember a pound of fat takes up much more space than a pound of muscle so replacing fat with muscle will actually make you smaller.

The scale can be misleading. A person could gain muscle, and gain a bit of weight, but actually be smaller due to muscle being denser than fat.

Almost all the big and bulky people you see in bodybuilding contests (male or female) are taking steroids. (even if the contest is a "natural" contest) Most people seem to picture those type of people and end up incorrectly fearing they will look like them with a fraction of the effort.

Most people couldn't get big and bulky even if they tried. (besides being a fatass)

Hello to you cavities and constant visits to the dentist.

I would recommend swimming but it has its drawbacks. Your skin becomes dry as shit and you will get rashes or a lot of chaffing unless you keep your skin well moisturized. Also will probably lose a little bit of your boobs.

I took a class in college called fitness swimming and I was amazed how much everyone lost in the class. Add that class with running, eating right, and some yogo and you will have a fuckin hot body in no time.

Well I'm getting conflicting advice in this thread. Most people are saying less weight longer reps, whereas several others are saying use heavier weights...do both work, and one is better?

Also, above anything else thanks very much for all of your advice. I own some 5 lb weights, but I'm a little confused as what the difference of doing 45 reps all at once vs. doing 3 sets of 15 is?

You should be toned from all the housework and cooking that needs to be done.

Jk :3 Liek someone said above, yoga is good, I thought it didn't do shit but when I went to the missez class it was a lot harder than she made it.

    ::edit::

Also it makes sex even better, I remember the missez doing this pronecorbramonkey pose and ohhh... god I wish she wasn't sick so I can tap some ass...

They accomplish pretty much the same thing, but doing more reps at lower weights will just take longer.

Try to picture it like this hypothetical:
doing many reps with little weight will work say 30% of the total muscle tissue in that area, and damage (workout) it a certain amount. Although doing more reps might mean you're improving that 30% of the muscle by some imaginary modifier of 1.15...
Or if you did few reps with a really high weight targeting another 30% of the muscle tissue, and modifying by 1.15 again...
if you did a weight you can only move 10 times, and try to do 11 reps with it, you would be getting the best of both, working 70-80% of the muscle, but modifying it by a -slightly- lesser degree lets say 1.10.
The total gain in muscle is greater in the medium rep, medium-heavy weight strategy. Of course, it doesn't actually work like this with any quantifiable modifier, its an exaggerated maximum growth example.
Also, your muscles need time to recover energy after you use them at high intensity, give yourself a sold 90-120 seconds between sets, you're not trying to train their endurance.

If you were lifting weights to try and improve your endurance, or increase the total amount of weight you could lift, it might be faster to use a high weight x low rep, or low weight x high rep strategy. Your objective though, is to increase total lean muscle mass, so a combination of both is best.
