Korg DS-10 Synthesizer for Nintendo DS

There's already been quite a few musicians (and would-be ones) brought into the Nintendo DS fold thanks to apps like Jam Sessions, but it looks like there could soon be another wave flocking to the popular handheld, with the official, Korg-approved DS-10 synthesizer from AQ Interactive now headed for the DS in Japan. As you can see for yourself in the video after the break, like Jam Sessions, the synthesizer is anything but a game, with it boasting two patchable virtual synths with two oscillators each, a drum machine, a sequencer, and a full range of effects, to name but a few features. You'll also apparently be able to wirelessly link up several systems to play together or simply exchange sounds and songs, although you'll apparently have to make do without MIDI support. Needless to say, we'll keep you posted on any word of a release 'round these parts, but in the meantime, you can look forward to this one hitting Japan in July for ¥4,800, or just under $50.

Meh, my buddy has a Kaos Pad that he can hook his guitar up to. This is just a nice watered down version for the masses, gets the job done for what it is.

Well, not really. The Kaoss pad is an effects generator. This is a dual analog synth with a drum machine and sequencer. So you could make full on choons with it, not just mess around Plus it's modeled after Korg's king MS-10. Sexy.

Saying that, I'm all over this thing when it hits the US.

Are there non-DS devices that can receive wireless data from the DS, to transfer it to a computer or other device? They implied you would only be able to transfer to other DSs.

Will whatever you make exist only on the DS?

Re: Korg DS-10 Synthesizer for Nintendo DS

At the very least you can record what you make on the DS onto a computer via the headphone jack (you'd have to splice some wires, but nothing too major).

As for other wireless devices, I have no idea. There's a little dongle Ninty makes that connects to the USB port of your PC that allows you to share your PC's internet with the DS (makes a WiFi connection if you don't have a WiFi router). Someone might be able to hack that signal to grab the audio from the DS-10 if they're inventive, but that's the only thing I can think of atm.

Hopefully the company making the DS-10 will release a USB or mini-audio cable that hooks into the headphone jack or through the GBA port so we can record outside of the DS. Knowing Korg, they would go through the trouble to allow us to record in a fashion such as this. Here's hopin!

I am a confirmed Korg-slut, and am considering purchasing a DS just for this. I love my microKorg, and a shiny little pocket-sized Korg borders on vibrator-levels of audiohorny for me.

[edit]I'm entirely unfamiliar with the DS, does it have any kind of audio-out other than a headphone jack? I suppose it'd be too much to hope for a digitalout. USB might be okay if you could get it into a sequencer, whether hard or soft.

The DS has a proprietary headphone out jack. You can only use licensed headphones for the DS. Other than that it has a jack for the battery charger along with a DS and a GBA game slot. Nothing else. So Korg would have to release a special adaptor/dongle to allow audio out. Or like I said, you could buy a set of Nintendo headphones (10-20$ if I remember correctly) then splice the wires into an audio jack and hook that to your pc. Then record the audio with whatever program you have to capture audio from your soundcard.

Are they tailor-made for the DS? I was under the assumption that the phono jack is a special kind and not a normal mini-phono jack. I could be wrong, as I've only played my friend's DS, but I know the GBA is made that way. If not, than all you have to do is buy a 1/8" -> RCA type jack to hook it up to your PC. Either way it won't be too tricky, just one way requires work on your part.

Re: Korg DS-10 Synthesizer for Nintendo DS

Thanks for the answer about the specs. I'm sure I could rig something, I did that a lot when I first got my minidisc player (did anyone else in the States have one/use these? I fucking loved it and they never took off). My only real concern would be if I have to go digital from DS > analogue connection > digital in to my soundcard, all the sound quality would be lost.

[edit] OH I WILL MAKE THAT SHIT FIT

what the hell? It's got a normal headphone slot so you can stick any headphones you want. It's not a GBASP, it's a DS, you're probably confusing the two.

That's fantastic, so a male 3.5" to male RCA split into my soundcard. It wouldn't be a direct MIDI transfer, but I could at least record something directly to .wav without too much loss in sound quality. This would be fucking brilliant in terms of "oh, I just had a great idea and I'm no where near anything". And if Korg comes up with one of their shiny adapters, the more the better.

This thread has made my day :3

Yeh, the GBA SP headphones fit into the link cable or charger ports, not sure which as I never got any but I've seen 2 come in since I've been at GS. lol
