New to FFXI

I have a few questions that I figured I would ask here before anywhere else. If I play this game on XBOX 360, do I still have to pay for playonline even if I pay for XBOX live? My other question is is it even worth coming into this game now? I mean it has been out for what 6 years? I don't want to get into a game like this for it to somehow end in the near future? Thanks for any help.

Firstly, you don't need XBox Live Gold, you can just use the free Silver one. Unfortunately, either way you'll be paying SE via Playonline.

As for longevity, I'm pretty sure they'll try and milk it for at least another expansion or two, I'd guess 3-4 years minimum, plenty of time to achieve a good amount.

Tons of content in the game right now for anyone to do, whether you're hardcore or wanna play for a few hours a day.

If you've played any other MMOs, in comparison, you don't level as fast here and there's not much solo play in your first time round to 75, also unlike many other MMOs, while FFXI does have 20 jobs to play, not all of them are exactly useful or saught after in endgame situations.

Thanks for the answers. A buddy of mine used to play on Lakshmi and when I told him I was thinking of getting the game, he said that if I did that he would start playing again. I figured I would have to pay for playonline so that's not a problem. Anyways might see some of yall in game

You don't necessarily "pay" for PoL, you are paying to play FFXI, so whether you pay for XBox Live is kind of irrelevant.

New people join all the time, and are probably better off for it. The game up to 75 has been pretty much tweaked to the point that anyone could do in way faster than a couple of years ago. End-game is huge so you will likely never run out of things to do.

As for the game dying, people always fret over this, but once a game like this is out the door it becomes a cash cow, so you are very unlikely to see it shutdown for a very long time. I mean Ultima Online is still going.

All I can emphasize is make friends. There is a boatload of content as people have mentioned, and on a whole it is easier to get to 75 than a few years ago.. but convincing people to go and redo Zilart, CoP, and ToAU missions and the like will be more difficult than most anything else.

If you are interested in starting, see if you can have a couple buddies join with you. Having someone with which to commiserate, plan, and level will be extremely helpful.

Since you have a friend on the server, have him find you a really good LS for fairly new people. Starting in a really good helpful LS is one the best things you can do to make the game much more enjoyable.

I think you can have a lot of fun starting the game today, as long as you don't start alone.

Almost everything in this game requires a group, and solo play is very scarce. But if you play with one or several RL friends, starting now won't be a big issue, as long as you progress at the same pace and have jobs that can work together (a tank, a healer, a DD...).

Lakshmi has a big low-level player base, too. And the economy is slow enough for you to afford the gear you will need with a reasonable farming or crafting time.
