    Lesser known games (Infantry)

Does anyone else play any lesser known but still really fun online games? A long time ago I used to play a game called Infantry. At the time it was fairly popular with a few thousand people in total online across both of those games, infantry being quite a bit more popular. I think this game could have grown a lot more but under sony's infinite wisdom they decided to make it pay 2 play, this effectively killed the game and probably 90% of the players stopped playing. Just last week I found out the game became free again about 6~ months ago. It's still suffering from a low population but the more popular zones are full during peak hours. I have had more fun in this game than any other game I have ever played, and due to the competitiveness there is really unlimited amount of playtime available.

There are different zones with different styles of play. There are CTF style team vs team fighting in bases, solo or small team fighting for experience used to buy skills to run faster, hold more stuff, use vehicles, be able to use new weapons or open up new classes, etc. There is also human team vs alien team zones, and some sports style zones. The classes and weapons differ between zones but there is a huge variety of ways to customize yourself with weapons and armor, as well as distinct classes. There are the brute force classes, the commanding ones who can summon people on your team, the invisible but weak armor classes, high tech classes that can shoot through walls, and classes inbetween.

Some vids (not a lot to choose from on youtube so the quality isn't the best) and info about the game.

Link to dl game. It's free and even shit computers can play it http://www.station.sony.com/casualProduct.vm?Id=039

Ok, so I've officially sounded like a sony employee or something so feel free to add other games that you think deserve more exposure and are really fun to play.

FAQ of sorts (I don't like the controls setup they list however) http://forums.station.sony.com/station/ ... 1500005580

Oh, and if anyone else used to play this game tell me what zone you used to play and your name so I can see if I remember you. And if anyone wants help figuring out how to configure the controls to circle strafe (default strafe isn't gonna work sorry) just tell me, help buying ammo and what not I can do too

I use to play an online version of risk with some friends for awhile. Its a pretty basic version but you can make your own maps. They even had one that was the inside of the millenium falcon.

I played 9dragons like a year ago. It's fun for a few weeks, but the interface is clunky and it turns into a Korean grindfest pretty quick. But hey, at least it's free!

    Re: Lesser known games

I used to play Earth: 2025 (free), TDZK (free), and Evernight (free trial, but cheap).

Earth: 2025 is a browser based text strategy game based on forming alliances with other countries (players) and developing your country via economic and military management, as well as taking land from other people via attacks. The game itself is a little dry if taken by itself, but I liked it because of the community. Their community forums are what BG forums are to FFXI. People talk about in-game drama (plenty of that, when you have rival alliances, wars going on, suspected cheating and botting, etc.) as well as politics, science, current events, or whatever else is on people's minds. The only downside is that the creator/manager of the game pretty much ignores the community, and is kind of like SE. He'll make the occasional announcement or change, but otherwise is an intangible figure.

TDZK apparently is down indefinitely while the creators are working on a new project, but I liked it. It was another browser based game with a mixture of text and graphics. Set in space, you start off as the pilot of a frigate and you make money to build better ships or rebuild a ship if yours got destroyed (sort of EVE-esque) through resource gathering or raids on other ships. There's a little map and galaxy system and you move around exploring, claiming undefended planets and such in the process. You can form alliances, have alliance-owned planets on which you build defenses, generate resources, hold stuff, etc. as well as raid other planets for ownership. The creators of this game remained involved with the community, so that was good. Unfortunately, there was no larger sense of community out of the game like there is with FFXI.

Both the above games persist over long periods of time, and are reset only once every few months.

Evernight is not free, but it is cheap with a free trial and they meet the increased expectations that come with not being free. It's a graphical browser based strategy game with a large map grid(irregular cell shapes, not square) full of various terrain and such. Each player is placed around the map at least 3 moves away from any other player, and that is their home region. Each turn, you get income generated from the regions you own with which you produce basic military units at structures, upgrade them, or build new structures which are used as another point from which to produce units. You can then move them around the map, and if a region is unoccupied, you take control of it. If there is someone else's units there, you fight and the victor takes the land with whatever survivors he has left. There's a lot more depth to it that I'm leaving out, such as special units, spells, diplomacy, or complex tactics, but that's the basic gist. It's a slow paced game, however, as you move only once per day. However, it does take a considerable amount of time to carefully plan your moves and engage in diplomacy with your neighbors while plotting against others once the game gets going. You can join up to 8 different games at once as a subscriber, and a typical game lasts about 20-30 days (turns). The admins are involved in the community and are accessible.

This one is great if you like wracking your brain on how to best handle a situation with your resources, trying to anticipate your opponents, taking as much time as you want to think about it, and discovering the next day how it unfolded. You assign orders during the day (e.g. what to produce, what units to move, what spells to cast, etc.) and everybody's moves are calculated simultaneously at a designated time each day. You can change your mind as much as you want until that time, as nobody can see what each other's moves are (or the results) until that time.

Yeah it's a fun game until the serious grind kicks in, I got to mid 40's thanks to some double xp weekends, but to take it further would have driven me insane.

Played infantry as well while we waited for Diablo 2 beta. It was laggy as fuck on 56k, and we were getting booted all the time, but we still had a lot of fun.

Earth:2025...lol. I remember playing this years ago. Also played Utopia or something.

Haha wow, I suck at this game. What's your control setup, Blarg?

    A & D are strafe
    W & S primary 2 weapons
space, shift for other weps mostly while moving cause they are easy to hit
    f, c, z for grenades, mines, RG's
    E & Q for generator(s)
arrow keys for forward, back, turn left and right
0(insert) for repulse, I like it here cause its a quick reaction button

You can shift all those buttons 1 bit over to the right to free up some more buttons if you need it (ie. S & F are new strafe, E & D are new primary weps) but I think certain key combinations when pressed didn't work for me so i moved it back to the left.
I obviously have the 'enter to type' option on

I mostly play the CTF and EOL zones, although EOL often has too much rape to solo on.

I remember playing infantry a long long time ago. I also took another look at it oh... I don't know, like half a year or something and I thought the free version they were giving was a watered down version, with the full version being pay.

Most of my memories are of generally sucking hardcore at it. Also, people bitching about mouse aiming, which I used to use. :elmer:

Ya, they used to offer guests, that is non payers, 1 hour of playtime before having to re log in. This meant that they couldn't really accumulate any good gear so they were under armored and had shitty weps for most of that hour. Thats probably the watered down version, this is the full game just with less people so far.

I used to play Adventure quest, It's free and was fun. Was able to kill hours on it before I found XI. I still go on every once in awhile.

Ugh, I keep getting an error every time I start up Infantry. I've tried re-installing a couple times but nothing seems to work.

Error : the instruction at "0x77f5234c" referenced memory at "0x00111111". the memory could not be "written".
