KH2*. I hated KH1's battle system honestly heh. And even KH2 was insanely easy unless you actually went through the trouble of importing/downloading Final Mix and beating the organization.
At least it was fun. Fun. Real-time battles that aren't just, well, fun, tend to bring down a game. And for this example, I'll point the finger directly at fucking Tales of Legendia. That game can die in a thousand burning, raging fires from Hell.

The obvious solution is that every RPG just needs to use the Star Ocean 2 battle system.

quoted for great justice and fixed classification

(some of the tales games are viable replacement options too!)

Well it was a PS2 game, I honestly wasan't expecting much out of this battle system tbh.

I disagree with Star Ocean 3, but regardless, I think most people agree that the Star Ocean series as a whole is always home to the best combat systems for Action RPGs.

Maybe I just missed the Eternal Sphere lockdowns and got annoyed by enemies actually being able to fight back

    Crisis core's battle system: X X X X X X X X X X R X L X X Triangle X Square X X

It's almost as addicting as Phantasy Star Online's combat system . I'm 60 hours in and not done with all of the missions yet :/

Re: Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core

Jesus, Krandor, that's exactly what I would have said in regards to Star Ocean series and 3 being, well, not all that stellar in terms of its overly complicated battle system, seeing as it's action based. I can't tell you how annoyed I got with having things regulated by how hard I pressed the button, or just with the stupid bar for doing attacks and crap (I've already forgotten--and no, I never beat SO3 because it wasn't really that fun, even if everything else was good).

With regards to a list of aRPGs I'd go for, hm... we'll include things in the vain of Kingdom Hearts here, however Zelda doesn't count (lack of a level up system or stat/skill customization).

My list looks kinda like this, but I'll probably forget something. And before someone accuses me of being an unbeliever, I can't exactly classify Valkyrie Profile or SMPRG as an aRPG.

    Star Ocean 2
    Seiken Densetsu 3
    Tales of Phantasia
    Terranigma
Crystalis (people seem to forget this game exists and is amazing especially for when it came out)
    Tales of the Abyss
    Tales of Symphonia

Those are going to be the ones basically that I can name off the top of my head as being utterly amazing (and widely considered that as well), and the order I'd probably put them in too. I'm sure I'm forgetting something--I have that kind of feeling I'm missing something really important. Oh well.

But I could start spouting off a long list of aRPG titles that could be easily ported or played on your PSP right now via emulators, and Crisis Core wouldn't even begin to match up to any of them. And any of the RPGs listed in that list (BESIDES Tales of the Abyss because I do not want to deal with the world map loading bullshit), I'd rather play a second, third, or in two cases fifth time instead of feeling Crisis Core.

Man, am I glad Wild Arms XF kicks so much ass, otherwise I would have thought I wasted money on buying another PSP after I sold mine a year ago.

ps: before you complain about Tales games being on list 3 times, note that I play games for gameplay--and if they have a really good story, it's simply bonus points, and a bad story is not going to make me want to not play a game.

Stopped reading at the bolded part.
Complicated my ass, you have 2 attack buttons... 4 tech (max) can be set at a time and are controlled by holding the attack buttons.
    D-pad for dodging
    Analog for movement
Buttons to switch characters and a menu button.

Also, if you use your brain you can make the game pathetically easy so you don't even HAVE to use all of that.
You can literally set up your characters so that you only need to press 2 buttons over and over if you really feel the battle system is too complex.
I really just see it as more versatile so there are multiple ways to play.

You want complex, go play Steel Batallion or something.

The only thing that got me at first was MP death (because I didn't read the manual before playing) and once I figured out what was going on I just keep MP up.
Also, before you come back calling me an idiot or whatever for disagreeing with you watch this and tell me if it looks complicated. (Boss of the game on the hardest difficulty being taken down like nothing.)

I just watched Last Order and realized there are like 10 turks there, (I assume they're all in Before Crisis but SE is too 'jp onry' to bring a port of it over here) but only 5-6 of them are in FF7 and even less in Crisis Core... what the hell?

Bad choice of words, perhaps, clunky and too much downtime is more correct. Having to wait and rest to be able to attack is the worst idea for an action battle system ever--if they wanted to do something like that, they should have just gone the rest of the way over to an ATBish system.

Couldn't phrase my idea right--was trying to teach some idiot how to change their password in windows over the phone (and unfortunately, we get way too many calls asking how to do this).

Really? i'm pretty sure the last one in that row of turks (last one to talk too) is a redhead that sorta kinda resembles Cissnei heh.

I wish they would've talked about her more... she obviously had a crush on Zack, and they kept teasing with the whole "real name" thing... well what is it?! >.<

Re: Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core

How the fuck can you complain about the combat system being simple? WTF did you expect freaking 50 combos triggered by entering a string of 20 commands? It's a bloody RPG saying it's combat system is simple is basically saying most RPGs and action games are simple (hell SSBB is simple as hell but it doesn't detract from the game.) Dude you're complaining because you just don't like them making another FFVII game from what I can gather. Most Zeldas, FFs, games in general rely on 90% hitting the attack button to perform different actions while occasionally dodging or blocking. By your logic something like Diablo 2 has a retardly easy and simple combat and yet it still had good gameplay.

As you get further into the game combat can be far far more strategic in Crisis Core. Sure some crap is just dodge behind the big enemy crit, crit, crit, etc. but try fights where you're going up against 3+ mobs that all have attacks that can one shot you and take 5-10% from physical damage. Ya there's obviously ways to get around it but the point is you can't just sit there and hit X, X, X, X, Square, etc. without a strategy and odds are on the fly you'll be switching between attacks, positioning yourself to mazimize damage, and watching your back so you don't get gang raped. As action RPGs go CC isn't anything special but it's pretty damn good.

The only thing that I think they could have done to make combat more interesting is given you a bit more control over the DMW. Personally though for a hand held game it's perfect strategy set-up comes before combat and you're not sitting there micro managing during combat makes it short and sweet fits exactly the mood of the game.

Re: Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core

My apologies for the derail, but where can one obtain some of the older Star Ocean games? I've played SO3 on PS2 and really enjoyed it, and the others seem to be just as good.

For not-completely-derailing points, I echo the people who have said that both a handheld game and an RPG do not generally incite complicated battle systems, especially in a story-based game.

Ok, Misterbob got anything relevant to say? Otherwise seems to me like you're just post +1 counting.

I stand by my reasoning the combat system isn't a detraction from the game if people think it's bad then their standards are far to high.
