In that gif the lines kinda go past each other when they're being pieced together, so it doesn't really work.

it has to do with the angles of the triangles. the way it's setup, the loss of the area of the squares the triangles cover/dont cover on the north edge accounts for the square on the bottom one.

fyi, its the orange penis looking block that's causing it, its too long. In the first image there are 2 spaces on the bottom, 5 on the top. In the second, it creates a small gap because it moves down. I don't know how you don't see that.

the red block is 8x3 the green block is 5x2, it only LOOKS like it's a straight line(cause of the thickness of the lines that make the triangles up) if you look at the triangle as a whole, you can spot that they don't line up with each other. the loss is created from the dimensions of the triangles

The long side of the first triangle bows in slightly. In the second one it bows out slightly. This means it's actually 2 sides not one. This is why I hinted that it isn't really a triangle but a quadrilateral. The empty spot is made up by the bowing out of the long "side".
