What's the verdict?

So, I'm sure a lot of people have been in the same situation...basically:

-I took a break from the game (I stress break, not quit), and let a friend use my osode.
-Friend decides to quit about 6 months later, gives everything away?
-Friend comes back, gets his own osode, then gets hacked or something
-Now I finally get a hold of him, and after being told of his (mis)fortunes, and after bluntly asking him if he'd replace my osode, he basically told me no.

Why?
Because he's trying to get a Hagun (2m), and won't instead go for the 3m to get an Osode for me. It's not so much about the osode/3m, as it is about fucking principle. How the hell do I make this person realize that they have to get me an osode? Or am I being completely wrong?

i mean yeah, in a perfect world he'd be stand-up and give you an osode but... this is FFXI here. pplz is shady.

The only timeline I see if the friend quit 6 months after getting your Osode. How quickly did he come back, get rehacked, etc. Really, how long was it between you leaving and returning?

There isn't a statute of limitations of these things, but it's not like you came back in 45 days and he sold it...

It irks me that he wants to buy himself a hagun before paying me back...no, it irks me that he doesn't even think he owes me...

Two year 'break'? Yeah.. pretty sure that would be a free game item by then.. 6 months is pushing it.

My rule was always that there is a 1 month grace period for items valuing under 1m, 2 months for items valuing over 1m. After that point they're considered to belong to the person they were given to and they are allowed to do what they please with them. By rights if he really is your friend he'd do SOMETHING to help you, but 6 months of absence is just too long to expect to be able to come back and lay claim to anything.
