Gun shop in Mass. of all places had five, he pre sold every one of them in a week. I've seen a DE but never have fired one, .357 long barrel revolver is probably the largest pistol I've shot, but my favorite rifle was the M4A1. This was not a knock off, my parents are police offices and they had some on loan from the local base for counter terrorism and urban combat training. Still were unlocked for full Auto, so I was able to burn through about 150 rounds, in a couple of minutes. I was able to hit targets up to 75 yards center mass with full auto bursts, the accuracy and balance of that gun was amazing. I have been thinking about picking up a nice pistol though, I miss shooting the 1911 .45, its such a well made gun. I may poke around a couple shows and stores around here if they have any decent ones and piss away some tax refund money.
M4A1's are garbage in real life situations. had to use one my first tour through the desert...hated that thing. the MK416 is a HUGE improvement, in both accuracy and durability. i can only recall mine jamming a couple times and that was in some pretty extreme situations.
Wow I'm surprised, I've only heard good things about it until now. Glad you made it out though, I've also heard a lot about the M8, the new multi platform/modular rifle , have you been able to get your hands on one of those?
the xm8 was supposed to have been released in 03/05...i got out in 05 and it was still being "tested" and delayed further. from what i hear from my friends that are still in, it's still being delayed. i never even got my hands on one...and i've fired damn near every weapon in the US arsenal...lol. i still maintain that if i had it all to do over again i would've never picked up a M4. would rather grab an AK from haji than use that POS.

You ever get a chance over there to get your hands on a IWI MICRO TAVOR ASSAULT RIFLE. I know its caps but that is how cool that gun looks. Would be a great gun for city SWAT teams. All I have ever heard about the XM8 is that its all hype.

Re: Buying my first weapon, would like input from gun owners

i'll grant you that the Tavor rifles all look cool as hell, but i don't know how they perform. the israeli army was never real friendly to us...so i never got to try one out. i'm not opposed to bullpup rifles simply because it allows for better accuracy and consistency in a smaller weapon overall. i can't imagine carrying around an old school M16 in iraq, in and out of buildings and such...would be such a pain. the chinese have a neat little bullpup variant of the SKS...don't remember the exact name, but i saw a few of them in cambodia and when i visited family in mongolia, while driving through northern china. my uncle tried to tell me the name of the rifle, but i speak zero mandarin and zero mongolian...so he was using crappy english to try and tell me. lol

Re: Buying my first weapon, would like input from gun owners

Weren't the benefits of the Xm8 were supposed to be that it's incredibly light weight and I believe made of mostly plastic pieces aside from the things that have to be metallic, aside from being able to carry attachments in the gun itself and various other improvements? Not a huge gun fan/owner but I like military grade weapons and reading about advances in weapons.

Edit: Aparently the project was formally cancelled?
The XM8 is a developmental U.S. military designation and project name for a lightweight assault rifle system that was under development by the United States Army from the late 1990s to early 2000s. The Army worked with the small arms manufacturer Heckler & Koch (H&K) to develop the system to its requirements in the aftermath of the OICW contract, for which H&K had been a subcontractor to ATK. Although there were high hopes that the XM8 would become the Army's new standard infantry rifle, the project was put on hold in mid 2005, and was formally cancelled on October 31, 2005.
Of course its wiki so, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XM8_rifle
