I hope it takes awhile to get into effect, I'm almost there, ALMOST. If I get fucked, I'll have to ask for loans. WHO WANTS TO BE MY COSIGNER?

It's not the governments job to educate us anyway. Plus, why would anyone trust the info they are giving our children to be correct? They can't do alot of things right and you know it.
aaaaaaaaaaaaand here comes the stupid train.Originally Posted by Egon

Seriously... They aren't out to get you.
this shit pissed me off. Finally got settled in cali and started working towards being a teacher again (got part time as a tutor so I can learn how california teaches.) wanted to try and get a teaching assistant job in the fall but this basically means I'm fucked. All those teachers getting laid off are gonna be applying over me and no way would I get a job over them.
-.-; fucking timing.

It's a good habit, you know. Thinking things through before you say them.
LOL, actually I tutor the Downtown area (read: Compton + Chinese) but one of my friends was a TI and went to Compton. At first he was like "I wanna make a difference in those kid's lives," eventually he quit and he said "Jesus Christ, those kids behaved like animals, their parents were even worse."Originally Posted by archibaldcrane

holy shit at this coming from guartz...Originally Posted by guartz

do you really, honestly believe that he's implying that the government can check every square inch of the US to make sure every child everywhere no matter what is in school when they're supposed to be 100% of the time, and watch every teacher everywhere at all times?
Really?
To add onto that:Originally Posted by Maxxthepenguin

Also, it's the politicians and bureaucrats that people like to say can't do anything right, not all government employees. To imply that public school teachers are incompetent is kind of a slap in the face to those teachers who are genuinely trying to do a good job educating our children (which is probably why they wanted to become a teacher in the first place).
As for incompetent politicians, there really is no "right way" to do it... short of not getting involved in scandals. Beyond that, any right or wrong in the political world just depends on whether you share the views of the representative you're choosing whether to re-elect next term.
I absolutely did. There has to be an institution in place to educate every child and the market has 0 chance of it. Letting profit motivation dictate availability of education is stupid and worse than what we currently have. Education dictated by income is a surefire way to keep people in their respective classes.Originally Posted by guartz
And what they said above lol

I thought he was implying that the "who else can guarantee" are the parents, although sadly, we can't really leave things up to the parents these days. Otherwise, we wouldn't need Social Services and such to recover kids from their incapable parents.Originally Posted by Plow
He clarified above, basically the point is that yes, it is in fact the responsibility of the government to educate.Originally Posted by Khamsin
Also that vouchers are dumb and would only make the situation much worse in the exact same ways it's screwed up now.
You know, when you think about it, this statement is unconsciously self-validating. It's also validated by:Originally Posted by Egon

oh okay. You guys totally won me over with arguments like "market is stupid" and "you are stupid".
Government should hold responsibility to education, because it's the best thing anybody has ever came up with, and it's totally moral.
Hey, fuck that, why are the universities still private?! Grrr, don't they know this amazing revelation yet?
...you do know that we have a public university system, right? Just as we have private primary/secondary schools we have private universities, but there is still a public parallel that relies on state funding and employees.
also is it your dream to live in a company town or something, at the complete whim of the market and the wealthiest among us?
fuck that.
The problem with the California budget is the whole housing crisis. When the times were good, people were paying property taxes on inflated home prices. He increased spending on schools and the budget was a little bit in the red but still tolerable.
Now the housing market went to crap. Property tax collections took a dump as houses foreclose by the hour. Republicans won't raise taxes. Democrats decry the cuts. We're gonna be sitting on a budget debate till August onwards. The shortfall realization came from new projections after the housing bubble burst and is still being adjusted. For all I know, the deficit will grow until the markets bottom out.
So are we in a recession yet if people are running away from their houses and property taxes?
