He tried to give Haloid a story and it was just cringeworthy so just take it at face value of him animating some video game characters fighting each other.
Also Rinoa's entry was really lame

So we've established you have A.D.D. Now I understand your view and opinion on the subject. Please don't tell me you turned this off after two minutes. To be honest I'd be surprised if anyone who disliked this even finished the whole scene and gave it a chance. What could have been added after two minutes of fighting to keep you watching for the next 9 minutes?Originally Posted by archibaldcrane
The context is that none is needed, it's fighting...both sides fight to defeat the other side. Do you need context in a game of chess? No, because the game in and of itself is beautiful in its simplicity. You add rules, dice, cards and fancy doodads to it and its no longer simple and streamlined, it's a huge steaming pile of shit. Your mistake was hoping for something more, just wanting more for the sake of having it, not because you felt it would contribute positively to the project. More, more, more, more. The American motto that no matter what we have, it will always be better if there's just MORE OF IT. Did you ever think that maybe adding everything you want will in turn just make the whole thing worse?Originally Posted by archibaldcrane
To end, if you're assuming this is my kind of thing, you're wrong. I can't stand 99% of action movies, because they're awfully done. My favorite TV show at the moment is in Treatment, a show that's body and soul is dialogue and the interaction between two human beings. Saying this needs dialogue and story is like saying that show needs action to "liven it up". Action may not be my forte, but I can tell when something is just amazingly well done and deserves lauding, and this is that.
Everyone knows he'll go somewhere beyond this, but as long as he's doing what he's doing, I think he should stick to the same basic template...because adding anything more beyond what he's doing short of making a full blown movie or game will just end up diluting it.
This guy needs a foley artist. Bad. It sounds like he just ripped all his sounds off of a Street Fighter II sound test?
I'll agree there, I'm the type of person who gets a lot of audio cues when he plays a game, hence I always play with sound on, and I'd say the audio rips were not of the best quality. Hopefully everything will be better quality once the HD version comes out.Originally Posted by miokomioko
Lockecole, for the 8th time, I don't want him to add a story to this project.
I want him to do something other than just "video game character brawl", because I find "video game character brawl" boring, because I have no reason to care if one group wins, etc etc. Is he like your cousin or something? Why are you so defensive about this?
Yes, I turned it off after two minutes. I saw the first one all the way through, this one appeared to be more of the same, and since it wasn't holding my interest, I didn't see a reason to stick it out.
Liking this doesn't make you a simpleton cretin who drools at pretty pictures and has no complexity. Simliarly, not liking this doesn't mean you have ADD or are a "typical american who always wants more more more!" or whatever the hell archetype you are trying to pin on me. It's just a difference of opinion, the personal attacks are completely unwarranted.
Everyone is going to have a limit at which they can no longer watch something like this. That limit is going to be different for each person. Dead Fantasy 1 + Dead Fantasy 2 = well beyond my limit. It stopped being cool to watch for me very quickly. Some people could clearly watch this for a long time. Both positions are fine, and neither person is worse for their preference.
All I needed to know. Based off that last statement I apologize for the all of the obviously unwarranted personal attacks. I hope all is forgiven.Originally Posted by archibaldcrane
ur part of a very small minority. that was more original and done better than 99.9% of CG animations i see in video games. and LOL at u stopping after 2 minutes. u fail so much. how can u only watch 2 minutes and comment on something that was 100% free that some amazing person did in his free time? go lurk more, cause ur lurking powers fail in this threadOriginally Posted by archibaldcrane
He didn't miss anything after the 2 minutes he watched. I enjoyed it, but the whole thing was "more of the same." I'll admit though, watching these characters doing more extravagant maneuvers and attacks while having no repurcussions of getting hit in the face repatedly with an axe kinda' dulls the senses and reduces your enthusiasm for the whole thing. Cool, but yeah, this guy could do so much more with his skill. He seems to just be satisfying people's (and probably his own) fantasies about "who would win in a fight?" type rhetoric that comes up amongst nerds. No shame in that, I suppose.
P.S. He could use more detail shots, closeups, etc so it's less like a hyped up zoomed-out demo video for some next-gen Ergheiz (sp?).
he'd spend months on a project like that and get like 2,000 hits instead of 200,000.Originally Posted by archibaldcrane
just because he's a good animator/choreographer doesn't make him a good writer, storyteller, character designer.
this was a lot easier to do with established characters, you don't have to explain why you have people fighting with guns and fists and bladed weapons. why you've got a girl wearing jeans and other girls in crazy ninja outfits.
you put a story around established characters and it becomes lame. fanfiction is generally bad, animated fanfiction doesn't make it much better.
then again, the other route is nearly impossible, creating original content (story and characters) that you want other people to give a damn about.
if you have no reason to care about hot chicks from FF fighting against hot chicks from Tecmo, what makes you think he can create characters out of nothing that you would care about?
the phrase "biting off more than you can chew" exists for a reason and that's basically what some people are asking for.
if you're an FF and/or martial arts fan, you'd at least miss the combo usage of potions and drunken fist fighting style which was pretty awesome.Originally Posted by miokomioko
I thought it was pretty cool, but at the same time, I can see how people might not. I'm not sure why there has to be a right answer here, but whatever.I think the people who dont like it have a point- its just fighting moves, with no goal, and no consequences- all these crazy attacks and nobody's doing any damage to anybody else.
But, to me, it reads like a demo reel. The guy is pretty smart, he picked something with an already established fan base to make his fights about, so he's got a big audience all set up and waiting. Maybe it'll get him noticed. So if you look at it in the context of a guy showing off what hes good at (choreography, fight animation), its pretty damn great.
I'm taking animation right now, and one of the things I've learned is that animators dont really do any of the concept/story/character design work. Everything is very segregated. Even amazing character animators like James Baxter (he did Tulio on Road to El Dorado) just animate, thats it. And that's a noble goal too, it shouldn't be like everyone working on a project really wanted to be the director, but couldn't so they do whatever else instead. You get people who just love doing environment design, spec. effects, choreography, etc. and are really great at it.
This guy is a fight guy, so thats what he does for his own projects, the ones he does for himself in his free time. Hopefully he gets to be a part of something bigger, but that might not be fan videos of videogame characters for people on the internet to watch (I dont really know his situation or what he does for a living).
You're a fucking idiot.Originally Posted by Lockecole7

Don't try to base an argument off the fact that I disagree with you, especially when you have to put words in my mouth to do so. I don't care if there is storyline or plot or dialogue in this video, this video was great. What I DID say was there is no way a FULL LENGTH MULTIPLE HOUR MOVIE would be acceptable without any elements besides pretty fighting.
I don't see how anyone can say that after two minutes it was "more of the same". That running down the building scene was pretty unique. It's not something you typically see in action scenes in movies and such and I thought that added a really nice touch to it. The tornado was nice too, but I just thought that the building scene was pretty creative, an idea that holywood should have thought of long ago (or maybe they have but it's just too hard to create with real people?).

love these videos so much.
I liked it, but I watched it with two or so breaks of a minute or two (since people were telling me how awesome it was on IM's, and me looking up haloid to get them more of the same). It's easy to see how it can get a bit bland though. I prefer Haloid myself, the pacing felt better, and it didn't seem so protracted.
Glad to hear he's getting an industry job though, with this kind of work, it's about time. :3

I think the FF team got hella overpowered.
Rinoa was too pwn, and Tifa just owned everyone else.
Yuna and Rikku should have just left to get sandwiches or some shit for when it was over.
In the first one the DOA girls kick some FF ass so I'd say it's just the typical action sequence of ups and downs for either side as the battle goes on. It went back and forth pretty evenly until Riona showed up, but she was there specifically to turn the tide and change the conditions of the fight.Originally Posted by TheShadyMan
