taking history of jazz right now...actually im in the class right now >_> we're listening to the Birth of Cool album, it's pretty tight. we've gone over a ton of shit....harlem stride probably my favorite movement so far, art tatum is unbelievable and fats waller is just awesome, jaw dropping. though ragtime was fun to go over, scott joplin and jelly roll mortin...yeah i didnt know much about jazz before but always wanted to learn about it. couldnt be more glad i took this class.

Being primarily a bassist, I'm admit my bias. Charles Mingus, especially after reading his autbiography, Beneath the Underdog, has been my favorite for quite some time now.

Over nine thousand times yes. Haitian Fight Song is pure condensed awesome, with a double bass riff which manages to be both the catchiest, funkiest, and most finger-twistingly difficult to play thing that I've ever heard. The man was a god. A drunken, violent, bass-playing god.

If you can find it, listen to the LONG (like 20-25 minutes) version of She wore a yellow dress, then blue silk.

One of the most amazing experiences I ever had in college was taking an elective class called Musical Experiences of the Late 20th Century. We covered punk rock, jazz from 50s bebop to 80s-90s acid stuff that Miles did, minimalism (i.e. Philip Glass, Brian Eno), classical-style composers from Aaron Copland forward, and the revolution in digital media and its impact on recording & distribution. Fuckin' best college class I ever took man. This guy was the professor.

I like three players on their team: Boozer, Kirilenko and Williams. I also think three of their key players are absolutely garbage: Harpring, Korver, and Okur. They would play Phoenix if the playoffs were today. I think they have a decent chance of winning that but I doubt they can make it out of the second round.

How did everyone miss this? I hate the Jazz, hate SLC, pretty much hate Utah.

Davis is a king, though I'd have to say Yusef Lateef is my all time fav. I want to listen to more jazz but I need to get more recommendations.
