    A lol question about Magic Damage Taken

    One of those durr can't find the info anywhere sort of questions which I should know but do not .

    Without shell5 I want to know gearwise the cap on Magic damage taken %, and then Magic defense bonus, if possible, thank you in advance, PS I am indeed a noob haha.

    There is no gear cap, just a hard cap of 128/256 magic damage taken. Magic Defense Bonus isn't known to cap, and comes from a seperate pool of damage reduction. Shellra 5 comes out to 66/256 with full merits, meaning you need 24.x% more from gear to reach hard cap, effectively 25% though the last point won't add a full percent of reduction. Without any form of shell, you need a full 50% magic damage taken from gear to reach hard cap.
    [Mob's MAB - Your MDB] * [1.00 - Magic Damage Taken%] = Damage Multiplier, though everything is done on a 256 scale so magic damage taken is not always the exact reduction it reads.

    I think what he's really trying to ask is "What is the optimal gear build for Job X (X=PLD, I imagine) to minimize magic damage taken?" or "How do I best survive a Citadel Buster?"

    From the other wiki:

    Effect - Base Adjustment (%) - Adjustment (256ths)
    Shell - 90.6% - -24/256
    Shell II - 85.9% - -36/256
    Shell III - 81.2% - -48/256
    Shell IV - 78.1% - -56/256
    Shell V (1 merit) - 75.8% - -62/256
    Shell V (2 merits) - 75% - -64/256
    Shell V (3 merits) - 74.2% - -66/256

    So, if your WHM has capped Shell V, you need 24.2% (so 25%) of gear to reach the 50% cap.
    Add some Magic Defense Bonus to go beyond.
