Considering nobody knows fuck all about it this early, it's kind of trite to let your fanboyisms get in the way of your common sense. At least wait until you see a pic, a plot, a trailer, hell, a fucking storyboard before you automatically start whining about the raping of your childhood. Especially since half the people whining were like 3 years old tops when Akira came out anyways. And yes, DiCaprio is actually a very good actor, if the movie sucks it won't be for lack of a-list talent.

Not to say it won't suck though, it's a possibility, but good god, it's a bit early to start screaming about the great injustices of life.

You presume too much. Akira was the first anime I was ever exposed to, at the age of 10. I have vivid memories of seeing it for the first time and being taken on a ride like no other. The best hollywood has ever done with movies that involve high speed chases and a citywide riot was what, again? And what was the last good sci-fi driven postapocalyptic film to come out, again?

Low hopes and expectations are set by the history of dreck put out by major motion picture studios, particularly when they are adapting material that has already been done on film. It's not fanboyism. It's backlash against what is a transparent grab at easy bucks.

The point that you should understand is that I'm not disagreeing with any of it, I'm just saying it's a but early to presume (yes, it's you) that you know everything about a movie that's still in early production. Is it impossible that the people directing, writing and acting are doing it because they to grew up loving Akira? I'd say it's more than possible, it's pretty fucking likely in fact. Now, regarding the actual production of the movie, sure, it's going to be hard to convince hollywood producers to spend millions of dollars on a story that's a bit weird and hard to grasp for american audiences. But the fact is, the way to aproach it is easy... if you think it'll suck, don't watch it. However, to boo it out the gate is silly, when there is at least a remote chance that it will turn out to be a good diversion for a couple hours.

Akira was the first Anime I ever saw when I was like 12 at GenCon in Milwaukee. I, too, was blown away.

However, if they are re-adapting the manga (which I have no familiarity with), I have no reason to assume it will completely blow. With decent films like V for Vendetta and Sin City out there, and given that it's not being directed by Michael Bay, Joel Schumaker, Brett Ratner or any of the other assclowns that Hollywood seems to like to hand 100+ million dollar pictures to when they want fucked up drivel with a big opening weekend, I'm reserving judgement til I see what they're going to do with it.

It's a completely unknown screenwriter and an unknown Irish director, whose only accomplishment was being nominated for an academy award at the age of 23 for an animated short. These guys probably don't have the "let's make everything as shitty as possible" beaten into them yet.

I still think that if they treat this the way they treated The Departed vs Infernal Affairs it could be good. Also the people bitching about this movie already should go check out the directors mini movies, theyre online and he did a pretty good job I thought.
