I don't think trying to push another craft to 100 is a good idea. I think digging combined with levelling most things to 60 is an excellent idea. Lot of benefit in being able to cross craft and if you're getting materials easily then even better.

I know people have said it, but push your cooking to 100. I mean, with fishing, you can make some good money, just on sushi alone. My cooking at the moment is only 55, but fishing is at 60. gonna get both up to 100 and go from there.
the 3m suggestion would take ALOT of patience, alot of farming, and in later levels alot of ENMs (as raxa is typically a pain to obtain among other materials)
i took the less patient route and did more immediately profitable things (given I was in a HNMLS at the time so randoming for a 2m behe hide was nice..) and spend the money on cloth to 99 (gimp;and eventually all remaining subs to 60
that being said im tempted to level fishing as i've been very frustrated with cloth and use it very infrequently, signing stuff for friends randomly
Well i would get a lushang + finish cooking and lvl all your subs to 60. if your keen on fishing too use the 3M to lvl a mule's wood up to fix your lu when you try get ebisu for all them breaks... or reverse it and lvl cookin on a muel and lvl wood on yourself lol depening how serious u take fishing and your ebisu.
Cooking makes money just not like huge HQ synths for smithin cloth leather etc where millions are involved, its a low numbers game which add up over time. sushi is kinda a upity market every man and ther fishbot mules make sushi the markets messed up so bad as are most markets..at least with cooking our stuff is consumable so it will always sell.
i have 100+2 cooking and 44 fishin but no lushang.. tbh i very rarely make much gil from cooking+fishing anymore i can when i try but do do often. i more use my skills to make my own jug pets food etc for BST, which is nice.
the current market kinda sucks there far to many people crafting teh same items all undercutting each other for that fast buck.. ide be very tempted to stick with your own craft and sit on teh gil and let it build up.. you could always do like a certian "taru" on quezty lvl a alchemy mule to 100 or so and synth holy water all day every day so long as light crystals are below a set value its npc gil all the way.. kinda like teh muffins for cooking but eaiser. lol

Sorry if this is slightly off topic but how much does it actually cost to get Smithing to 100? Do you need to mine as much as possible, or only after a certain level?
Like any craft, that depends on you. Would you rather spend your time mining for X ore or make money in some other way so you can buy X ore at the AH/guild store? How much time would it take you to mine for whatever ore? How much is your time worth?Originally Posted by XanthePandy
On my main character, I farmed/mined as much as I could. However, for my low level crafting mules I find it easier to send them money to buy things rather than me farming/mining and ship stuff 8 items at a time to them.
Takes ALOT. Smithing will bitch slap you around at certain lvls, with or without farming/mining. I'd estimate about 6~15 mil depending.Originally Posted by XanthePandy

Take all your money and invest in Waffles! Tastey Waffles!
Not to mention, any craft that uses mainly fire crystals is an extra bitch to level. At least on Midgar, that is. A few times a month there will be no fire crystals up on any AH on the server.Originally Posted by Sho
Sure you can farm them, but with the amount you need to level a craft, how reasonable is that?
Probably an accurate assessment. I leveled mine over 2 or 3 years, so the cost was fairly dispersed. As mentioned previously, some levels suck more than others. For me, it was 80-90, but that was just before troll bronze, which would have halved the costs for me.Originally Posted by Sho
Pretty much a general rule to keep in mind for all crafts: If you want to level fast, be prepared to pay for it. Leveling slow has the benefit of costing less, usually because of waiting for stuff to sell on the AH or waiting for supplies to become available.
Of course, by leveling slowly some markets may change. However, the people I see that complain the most about no money from a 100 craft are the ones that powercrafted it and have no idea how to actually make money. All they know about crafting was that it's "big money" and lived off a guide for skilling (not that guides are bad, they're a good starting point). If you level slow, you can make money even off of low level synths that others are too lazy to do. Ypu can also make money skilling on ingredients for later synths. For example, darksteel gear in smithing. 100 Smiths will T2 this gear, but the +1 is useless (can't be turned into anything and stats suck). The NQ is then used to make thick gear and, subsequently, cursed gear. If you make that 1st step, it will sell just because nobody wants to make that crap and end up with a bunch of useless HQs. Sure, it's not big money, but it works (and may possibly be incorporated into a skillup plan)
Along those lines, I leveled Clothcraft very slowly (18 months to 100 I think), and used all lowbie synths to fund it.
What changed when I hit 100? Almost nothing, I just stopped using the lowbie synths to skillup and started banking the profits. So many people seem to forget all the low stuff which is your bread-and-butter, but the secret to the whole thing is to have lots of AH mules anyways.
.
I never have problems with fire crystals. I get them for 700-1k a stack and they're plentiful in Jeuno and all the starting towns. I have problems with Water Crystals. The last few times I needed them, they were pushed up to 1.4k within buying a few and there were only a handful on the AH. After 1.4k, I stopped because I didn't want to satisfy people trying to beef up the price.
I read most of the posts in this and I have a question. Can anyone link me to a good resource on chocobo digging. This is the first time I've heard of people making good money with it and I know nothing about it.
To the OP: I'd say finish off cooking, level all subs to 60 and keep choco digging with the money you're making. If you need money terribly bad, you can craft with cooking like mad and camp the AH to put on more items as everything sells. For keeping a steady income, choco digging for an hour each day to make 50k-70k is quite a bit. Even after finishing my cooking to 100, I don't expect to make that unless I make multiple trips to the AH each day. The advantage I'll have is that I'll be able to synth for 1-2 hours in a day and sell my stuff leisurely over more time without having to devote time everyday (just inventory space).
smithing and GS will start to hurt you in the ass slowly once you get above 50 ¬.¬ I still feel the painOriginally Posted by XanthePandy
Most of us chocobo diggers are fairly secretive, for the fact that one capped digger can clean out a handful of zones. Just know that if you were to start digging now, with the fatigue system in place, it would take you around 2 YEARS, digging to fatigue every day, to cap out your digging.I read most of the posts in this and I have a question. Can anyone link me to a good resource on chocobo digging. This is the first time I've heard of people making good money with it and I know nothing about it.
Before the fatigue patch, it wasnt uncommon for a capped digger to make millions per day digging (during inflation). Nowadays, RMT dig around the clock on countless mules, more and more people are getting higher level, and the price on stuff you can pull up is dropping. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy digging, but that's about the only reason I still do it; is the pure enjoyment i get out of it. I could make far more profit spending my time farming.
