New router

So... now it's time to get a new router. My old DI-514 is old, and doesn't even work with my DS wi-fi!

Considering my new laptop with Intel 4965 WLAN (802.11a/g/n) Mini Card and my Nintendo DS, what routers would be a good choice?

Before I switched to FiOS i never had a problem with my WRT54G, performed fine.

Although it doesn't appear to support Draft N. Is Draft N a big deal, or is G better?

It's not N, and N is better. N-capable routers can be expensive though, and honestly it's only noticeably better if you're going to be far from your router. Wireless N I believe doubles the maximum range over b or g, and can send data at a faster rate. But unless you're going to be far from the router, or have a really fast internet connection, you don't really need it and G will suit you just fine.

your DS problem could be because it only supports WEP (fuck off nintendo and your insecure shit) so if you have WAP setup your DS wont work with it...

that aside, i also agree with linksys, though i have a dlink atm, but its just a Access point/switch atm (not using the routing functions of it)

The router is in the office, and my bedroom is across the hall from it, so at that location it's about 40 feet. In my living room, it's probably around 100 feet.

In my case, it's because it's a DI-514, which is on the list of incompatible routers. However, I do have WEP setup on it. If I get a newer router, will it have options for WEP and WPA, or just WPA?

I've had a ton of problems getting my Linksys Wireless-G to get along with my PS3.

And of course, I can't even use it with my PSP, gogo WiFi-Max, hello Monster Hunter Freedom 2.

If you get a WRT54G, make sure you get rid of the stock firmware for DDWRT http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv3/index.php

Makes it run so much better (not dieing when running torrents was why I switched, and it was so amazing) for free!

I recently bought a Linksys WRT350N and it's been awesome for me. The external storage is a nice feature and the Draft N definitely improved my range and signal strength all over the house. When I read the reviews, I figured I'd need to use the DD-WRT firmware to get it to be reliable, but I haven't had a single disconnect in over a month with the Linksys Firmware. Assuming you don't get a dud, this router is really nice.

That is a nice router, but a bit on the pricey side at 150 bucks. Unless you live in a huge house or have a specific need for wireless-n networking (and a superfast ISP capable of transferring at over 54mbps) there's really not much of a difference between that and a 40 dollar WRT54G. Most Linksys firmware is solid, but like anything else it's hit or miss for some people.

If you're getting a WRT54G, be sure to get an older one, preferably pre v5. After that they cut the hardware down a lot, and made them into a decent router instead of a kickass router.

I had a WRT54G for about 2 years and LOVED it. Was the best router ever. Then it died and i burried it. Baught a WRT300N and well its nice but I am a little computer stupid and well the wireless fails for me. Some days it works like sex other days it DC's every 15 minute. I gave up trying to get the ps3 to connect to it cause I was getting pissed off. So for now I just have everything hardwired and said fuck the wifi. What a waste of $$ Someday I will get my computer nerd friend to come over and set it up right. I miss my old WRT54G

Yeah it was a bit pricey, but I managed to get a combo on Newegg with a Wireless-N notebook card and a Wireless-N PC card all for $179. That and my G router couldn't put a strong signal downstairs to the Wii, and now my Wii gets a very nice signal. Now if only that could make SSBB not lag. :bagel:
