Re: Linking linkshell chat to our website

I was thinking a long time back about a way to link up in game chat directly with irc, similarly to the way that you used to be able to run bots in game in counter strike and have them report to an irc channel and visa versa. In my case, back in the day when I was adminning for a game community, we wrote a bot for use in a competition we ran which ultimately had real time chat between CS and the irc channel, which in turn allowed the admins to control games form in IRC, and kept the IRC channel updated on scores and what not from an in game bot.

It was so long ago now that I can't even remember how we went about doing it and I don't have anything to do with that community anymore, but as far as I know the system is still running strong 6 years later

Perhaps there is a safer way to write a bot that could work directly with irc, and then just use a web based irc to log on to your linkshell's irc channel?

Am I the only one thinking the OP is a cunt for coming along with a project like this and refusing to share the code?

<Taj> Hey I can make IRC work in FFXI with windower! You guys can't have it!"

<Miisha> Hey I made LS webchat! You guys can't have it!"

The difference is Miisha's code was already coded for her website. She(?) is willing to share the algorithm though which should be enough.

But this is really just the first version, if you have any ideas I'd be happy to hear them. It doesn't really have any security risks because it's just a file in my Windower\scripts directory, no one can access that. The web site itself is professionally hosted.
Since each LS would have its own implementation, you could even host the site on the same PC if you wanted. Bandwidth should be a non-issue. Ideally, you could host the web portion in *nix and run FF in a VM for max security (if there was a VM that would run it )
Oh totally. If Chatlink and the web server were on the same local network the design would be a LOT simpler. Could probably do the whole thing in PHP.

I was wondering when someone would rip me for not sharing the code. I don't know if I should feel honored or ashamed to be compared to Taj in this case, lol. In any case, the reason I'm not sharing the code is threefold. First, it would present a security risk. I'd have to cut major parts of it out in order to keep our site secure, which is priority one. Second, it's not like it's a program that you can just double click and run, or load into windower easily. Just getting it to run takes some knowhow and a basic understanding of how programming works. If I released it to everyone I'd be answering their questions for the next six hundred years. I know I'm not the only engineer that plays FFXI. The key is knowing the design, and other engineers can run with that. Lastly, it's very much written to integrate directly with the Orion's Door website. Just giving the code for Chatlink would still require people to code up their own web chat solution, or java applet, or however they might want to go about it. I just happened to go with Smartor's chatbox mod because it was easy to set up.

Edit: That being said, I'm totally willing to help other people set up their own implementation. That's why I posted in the first place. I'll be happy to make design suggestions and help people when they get stuck, because most likely I will have already gotten stuck in the same place once before.

Ill release the IRC plugin soon as I get the time to finish it (ie it actually be customizeable, properly connect, etc. Its currently a ghetto state not ready for release)

as for the OP. Why are you not just using WindowerHelper... ? Thats an extremely ghetto method of sending the text back to game, you could just use WH and send the commands to the window instead of writing to scripts.

Good question. I didn't know it existed. I'll look into it, thanks. :D
