Maury had one like this for a bit awhile back. Used to mess with it at work to talk to LS and read LS chat without actually being logged in game, since our work computers suck ass. Good thing to have at work to kill time~

Wouldn't there be a problem if a GM started sending tells to the Chatlink mule while the person who monitored the mule was afk?

Had a dedicated mule for this get banned for 'Sending irregular packets to the server' of course it was different code, just saying be careful. This particular mule had some 'eggdrop' functionalty to store TODs as well.

Linkshell sacholders could store/retrieve TOD's. Based on the mob stored, it would then calculate when the windows would come around again and notify in LS when particular windows were opening. The code is fairly easy php tied to a mysql backend.

Well the whole portal thing is a great idea but, if SE catches wind, they will ban the 'mule' creating the portal, that was just my point I guess. Im guessing because everything is prefaced with <mule name> <chatname> and the fact the mule did not have limitations on length(web side), thats where some of the 'irregular' packets were coming from. Just like copying and pasting into windower with too much text.

This could be limited in the webclient

absolutly, and it should. just define maximum username length and subtract that from whatever the maximum is. I dont know what the value is.

The programmer in me would also like to point out that another thing that could be a problem is special characters in messages from IRC that you normally can't input into FFXI. The parsing and forwarding process would then be slightly slower due to the additional character checks and the length checks mentioned in the post above.

I'm doing this. I just typed a bunch into the FFXI normal input to determine the maximum, subtracted one for good measure, and then limit all my input to the game to that length. Good thought, tho.

Re: Linking linkshell chat to our website

As far as GM's are concerned, yes, this is easily a bannable offense, and any GM with half a brain could determine that it was just a program relaying data back and forth by reviewing the logs. I guess my answer to that is "I don't care". If I get banned I'll regroup, redesign, and try again. I consider it a challenge. >:D
